The map has now been expanded to host snowy peaks and a network of icy caves, crawling with enemies to fight and treasures to uncover. This follows the recent Valheim Hearth & Home update which – as the name suggests – introduced loads of ways to help build and maintain your survival settlements. This included new crafting and cooking recipes, building pieces, and resources, greatly improving on the game’s foundations. With the Mountain update, developer Iron Gate Studio wants players to venture beyond their cosy abodes and into the perilous unknown!

Valheim Mountain Update Overview

The Mountain update expands Valheim’s snowy biome and adds brand-new instanced dungeons called Frost Caves, similar to the Burial Chambers found in the Black Forest and Sunken Crypts situated in the Swamps. The Frost Caves offer three new enemies, with new resources to gather, and new materials required to craft a new armour and weapon set

Only the bravest Vikings can venture into the quiet shadows that lurk in these caves to discover the ancient evil that creeps at night and pillage its treasures. Can you hear that? Is that…a ritual chant? And these…are these claw marks?

Valheim originally launched back in February 2021 and quickly went on to become one of the biggest breakout hits of the year. Its lo-fi visuals, Viking theme, and refined survival gameplay created the perfect storm, no doubt fuelled by the increasing boredom of gamers stuck in lockdown.

Valheim is still in Steam early access with more updates, content, and expansions in the pipeline. Iron Gate Studio has confirmed that its sixth biome update, Mistlands, is currently in the works. The game is due to hit version 1.0 at some point this year. It has also been confirmed that Valheim is supported on Steam Deck, for those wanting to take it on-the-go.
