VCT Champions 2022 – Playoffs: DRX upsets FunPlus Phoenix in their first match together

The former moved on to meet LOUD while the latter got bumped down to the Lower Bracket.

The second Upper Bracket match saw DRX meet up with FunPlus Phoenix in the second Upper Bracket quarterfinal match. The two teams are at the top of the standings in their respective regions, so the match is set to be explosive.

The match begins with Ascent, where DRX opened strong by winning six consecutive rounds before FPX managed to get their first round. The lead however was maintained all the way to the end of the first half where DRX led with a two-point lead. FPX however managed to claw back in the second half, where they managed to equalize by round 24. Thus, extra time was called.

One of the longest, if not the longest, overtime in VALORANT history so far was played in this game. The overtime lasted 12 rounds – the same length as one-half of a normal match. We saw DRX and FPX trading blows within those 12 rounds, with both teams equalising by round 32. FPX seemed to be on the path to winning the match by round 33, but in the end, DRX managed to overcome them from round 34 onwards. This gave them the win with a score of 19-17.

The first map match affected FPX as Breeze saw them not performing as well as they could be. By the end of the first half of the map, they were trailing DRX by six points. DRX then easily cleared the match by round 18 and won the map with a 13-5 score.

DRX, with this win, will be meeting LOUD in the upper bracket semi-finals. FPX will continue their journey in the lower bracket where they will be meeting Leviatán to see if they will be continuing their journey at Champions Istanbul.
