Viral Hit Placid Plastic Duck Simulator Brings Sony’s Tech Demo Full Circle on PS5, PS4

As PlayStation fans, we all know Sony’s fondness for the rubber duck. Back before the PS3 launched, the company showed a PS2 rubber duck simulation before showing how much improved it was on the advanced console. Sumo Digital even made a whole game based around the bath time playthings called Super Rub ‘a’ Dub. Well, developer Turbolento has taken things one step further (or, possibly, one step back) with Placid Plastic Duck Simulator, available on PS5 and PS4 now.

A viral hit on PC last year, Placid Plastic Duck Simulator is more of an experience than a game. After starting it up, you’re taken to a peaceful-looking pool, a duck drops into the water, and it floats around. Music plays on the nearby stereo, and after a while, another duck joins the fun. As a player, you have no control over the ducks; you can move the camera, switch the view to different ducks, swap to a first-person view of the pool, and turn the music on or off.

That’s it. If you’re expecting anything more than a relaxing screensaver, you’re in for a disappointment. It seems the narrator in the above trailer certainly doesn’t get it. However, the game has gained Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam — nearly eight thousand, in fact — so there’s definitely something to this zen-like journey.

There are over 100 different ducks to watch bob around, and they do interact with each other sometimes, but again, this is more about the vibe than anything else. If you’re into Trophies, this has got to be the easiest Platinum you’ll ever earn — just hit play and leave it running. The physics will do all the hard work.
