You will find the key near a note in the library. The note will tell you that the safe is hidden behind a bunch of books. It’s not the greatest clue because you are in a library. Head out of that room and go to the section with L, M and N. There are some books you can push over there.

You will need to use the key to open it. Interact with the safe and press up to access you inventory and then use the key. Inside will be a journal talking about the creatures that attacked you earlier. For now it has no value, but you will get something if you return to the guardian down below and speak with him. There is also a music sheet on the piano in this area if you are collecting those.
