For fans of the MudRunner and SpinTire series, excitement initially ran high when Expeditions: A MudRunner Game was announced in August 2023. However, their enthusiasm quickly waned as the developers didn’t mention or showcase anything regarding the multiplayer options in the game.

The previous games in the franchise all had their own fleshed-out cooperative multiplayer modes that allowed players to bring up to two friends along for the journey. It’s an essential part of the series for many players, and many even claimed they wouldn’t buy Expeditions if it didn’t feature any multiplayer mode.

Multiplayer in Expeditions: A MudRunner Game

Expedition: A MudRunner Game was first announced by Focus Interactive in August 2023. The devs called it an “exploration-focused spin-off” of the MudRunner series, and fans were excited to get their first look at the game.

The new gameplay elements showcasing different tools and vehicles in the few clips strung together were enough to build up the hype among veterans of the genre. But the main issue that stood out to the players was that there wasn’t any mention of a multiplayer mode anywhere in the video.

Things took a turn for the worse when the fans still got no news of the multiplayer side of things the following few months. Eventually, fans started talking about it in forums, asking and pleading with the devs to add this crucial element to the game that they all were eagerly waiting for.

Finally, on January 12th, the community manager on Focus Entertainment’s official forum responded that there would be a cooperative multiplayer mode in the game.

However, it won’t be available on launch day. Instead, the devs will add it in as a free update a few months after the time of release.

The publishers further acknowledged that the multiplayer mode is essential to the MudRunner experience. But the devs don’t want to deliver a half-polished sub-optimal experience to the players. That’s why they want to take their time with it and will add it in as post-launch content.

On a positive note, they also stated that many other post-launch updates will come for Expeditions: A MudRunner Game, making it one of the best experiences for fans of the genre.

While the lack of a Multiplayer mode during launch might come as a letdown for some, you can take solace in the fact that it’s coming later on. For now, we can only hope that when the multiplayer update drops, it will give us a perfectly optimized experience without any bugs or performance issues.
