“The growth of esports over the past 12 months has been considerable,” commented Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London. “The industry is generating millions of pounds for our economy, as well as creating much-needed jobs for our community, particularly here in London. With that growth comes a level of responsibility, and I am proud that my Sport Unites program is able to help fund LDN UTD, an organization who are using their platform and the power of esports.”

LDN UTD will host The LDN UTD Inter-Borough Esports Championships in December. These championships will feature multiple esports tournaments featuring NBA2k and FIFA21 games. Youngsters from the boroughs of Hackney, Kingston, Lambeth and Lewisham can sign up for digital workshops to develop new skills such as video editing, social media management and graphic design.

These workshops will take place in partnership with Staffordshire University London, Salford University and the University of East London. These universities already offer various esports programs as part of their curriculum.

The workshops will feature leading experts and special guests, including FaZe Clan’s Tassal “Tass” Rushan . The 26-year-old player represents FaZe Clan in FIFA and has a growing YouTube presence

Furthermore, these digital workshops can also be an opportunity for those interested to intern with LDN UTD and other industry partners. It could be a great start in the esports industry for youngsters in the aforementioned boroughs.

“The broader perception of esports is often focused around the very best individuals or teams competing in global tournaments”, said Oliver Weingarten, Founder and CEO of LDN UTD. “But in reality, there are lots of other roles that play a vital part in creating this hyper-modern entertainment form and we’re hoping to shine a light on that over the coming months.”

The LDN UTD Inter-Borough Esports Championships will take place from December 5-19th and will broadcast live on Twitch.

Esports is one of the fastest-growing industries globally and has found widespread mainstream acceptance in recent years. Using esports to help tackle unemployment could be a game-changer for young people in London. With official support for esports programs in the UK, this initiative could provide a boost to grassroots gaming and esports.
