The Shadowrun Trilogy is coming to consoles in June

The Shadowrun Trilogy of games is coming to consoles on 21st June 2022, Paradox Interactive has announced. Each game has been remastered and updated to play with a gamepad, with the trilogy coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

The trilogy starts off with Shadowrun Returns, which was funded by a Kickstarter campaign all the way back in 2012. It was the effort Jordan Weisman, the creator of the original Shadowrun tabletop RPG, and his studio Harebrained Schemes, who brought it through to release in the summer of 2013.

Following that initial game, Harebrained Schemes stuck with the game to create two expansion packs – Dragonfall and Hong Kong – adding new campaigns within the cyberpunk setting. These were both then splintered off into Dragonfall – Director’s Cut and Hong Kong – Extended Edition, as standalone releases.

First announced back in September last year, Harebrained Schemes is working through them to add upscaled graphics, improve performance and optimise the gameplay for controller. It’s not clear if any of these enhancements will make their way back to the PC versions of each game, but it doesn’t seem that they will.

Shadowrun Returns was not the last time that Weisman would create a video game from a tabletop game that he had created. Just as he was spurred on by disappointment in the Shadowrun game of the mid-2000s, he and his team sought to revive the BattleTech franchise in video game form, bringing it back to its origins as a turn-based tactical mech battler, as opposed to a real time tactical shooter, as seen in the MechWarrior games. Harebrained Schemes was then acquired shortly after the game’s release by publisher Paradox Interactive.

Will we see a console port of BattleTech in the future as well? Paradox Interactive have been increasingly active in their attempts to convert their traditionally PC-bound games for consoles, most recently with the release of Crusader Kings 3, and we know how popular XCOM has been on consoles. Last we heard, it was being “actively considered”
