2023 LCS Spring Split Week 4 Day 2: EG Defeat TL in the LCS Fiesta

LCS Superweek continued with its second day of games.

Day 2 of the Superweek for the 2023 LCS Spring was looking like a slow one. As we got closer to the end of the first round robin, the day did not feature too many games between top-of-the-table teams, nor between teams at the bottom of the league. The biggest matchup was scheduled for the opening as a struggling Team Liquid took on the Evil Geniuses on their rise to the top.

Other teams to keep up during the day were Dignitas and Immortals, as going 0-3 during the Superweek would be disastrous for their playoff chances. Especially Dignitas who still haven’t found their first win, even with IgNar joining the team.

EG vs TL

The first game of the day was home to one of the most chaotic early games we’ve seen this split so far. It had everything from jungle ganks, 2v2 kills, objective fights and even a solo kill by FBI on Yeon. When the dust settled, EG had a small gold lead. But it wasn’t that big of a lead, and they weren’t able to stack drakes either. So once the mid game hit and the game started to slow down their poke-oriented composition had trouble in teamfighting when they couldn’t find angles to poke.

TL took a Baron and had a good chance to siege the enemy base, but a couple of mistakes during that siege gave EG the fight they were looking for. This fight proved to be a disaster for TL as the game kept slipping out of their control. Even with Summit dominating the side lanes, EG’s poke started to stick on TL members and they started losing ground. A couple of crucial individual mistakes gave EG an opportunity for a Baron, and the siege to end the game.

IMT vs C9

Another hectic early game as both teams looked for early ganks. The game was going even in kills and objectives until a great Teleport cancel from Diplex gave C9 a big win in a bot lane fight where Fudge’s Jax found three kills. After that play, C9 pushed for both tier-two side lane turrets with their fed top laner and weren’t afraid to dive turrets, so their gold lead suddenly exploded to over 7k with a 20-minute Baron.

Thanks to the first drake going to IMT, C9 didn’t have the Soul and with the first Baron too early to end the game, they had to wait around for a bit. They almost overstepped around the enemy base once or twice, but they were ahead enough that it did not matter. They just waited for the next Baron spawn and IMT to contest, and just aced them to end the game in a clean matter.

100T vs CLG

We got a special guest as a caster for Game 3 as 100T co-owner Jack “CouRage” Dunlop joined the broadcast.

Unfortunately for CouRage though, his team fell behind in the early game after Contractz found the first blood on Closer during a bot lane counter-gank. CLG did a great job at answering most plays 100T wanted to do during the early game. And even though they had to give up some of the objectives, they had a handle on the game’s control. Despite 100T having a scaling draft and the game getting delayed due to the drakes on their side, the Thieves were never able to find a good fight, especially once Dhokla’s Irelia got too far ahead. The last chance engage near the Baron also went awry and CLG got the big buff. With their gold lead at 15k, CLG just went for one last fight and ended the game with a clean ace.

TSM vs FLY

The crazy day continued in Game 4 with the first Cho’Gath in two years, not to mention a level one 5v5 fight in a bot lane brush, with the first blood going to FLY. Bugi did a decent job at punishing some of the blown flashes in that level one with back-to-back ganks, which gave his team some breathing room. TSM were happy to scrap with FLY during the mid game, and they found some success. The only worry was the kills for FLY were going to Prince’s Jinx. But the first time this Spring it wasn’t the Prince show, but rather one by the TSM solo laners. With fed Cho’Gath giving the enemy carries no room, TSM had an easy time closing the game out and giving FLY their first defeat in the 2023 LCS Spring.

GG vs DIG

Lee Sin is back in LCS, but it went to the top lane for Licorice this time around with a twist. Unfortunately, Licorice fell behind early on in the lane and gave up the first blood with a dive from Jensen. But GG were able to stabilize with a good counter-gank from River at the bot side and get some gold on Stixxay. Which was great for them considering the recent form of the veteran ADC. DIG looked lost once they lost their early game lead, though it was already a small one, and there wasn’t much hope about a possible comeback. And there wasn’t a comeback as GG just ended the game in under 30 minutes.
