2024 NHL Draft Lottery and Combine Dates Set

On Friday the NHL set a date for the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery to be held on Tuesday May 7.

The lottery, held at the NHL Network studio in Secaucus, New Jersey, will broadcast on ESPN, Sportsnet, and TVA Sports.

Determining the order of the top 16 picks are the teams who didn’t qualify for the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Teams ranking in the bottom 11 of the 2023-24 NHL standings qualify for the first overall pick. Clubs can move up to 10 places in the lottery.

With an 18.5 percent chance of receiving the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft, the San Jose Sharks have the highest odds.

As part of the Erik Karlsson trade in 2023, the Penguins are set to send their first-round pick to the Sharks. If Pittsburgh lands a top-ten lottery pick, they might keep their 2024 selection and offer San Jose a 2025 pick.

The Chicago Blackhawks with 13.5 percent and Anaheim Ducks with 11.5 percent, also have high odds.

Chicago has the opportunity to select the top pick two seasons in a row after drafting Connor Bedard last year. NHL lottery rules state that no team can win the lottery more than twice in a five-year period. Selecting Celebrini would deprive Chicago of a chance at another No. 1 pick until 2028.

Utah, now home to its first NHL team, awaits its debut draft selection determined in the upcoming lottery. The yet-to-be-named Utah hockey team, beginning play in the 2024-25 season, will inherit the pick previously held by Arizona. Utah’s odds are the sixth highest at 7.5 percent.

Macklin Celebrini, the youngest player in NCAA D1 men’s hockey this season, is the consensus top pick from Boston University.

Scouting Combine

The 2024 NHL Scouting Combine, scheduled from June 2-8 in Buffalo, New York, highlights top draft-eligible prospects. Hosting over 100 players worldwide, it provides an opportunity for showcasing athletic skills on a global stage. Teams will have their initial opportunity to assess prospective players before the draft.

Las Vegas will host the 2024 NHL Draft on June 28.
