5 best signings of the 21/22 Premier League season

premier league transfers 21/22

The Premier League season is approaching its midway point and the transfer window will soon open again, allowing managers the chance to add new talent to their squads. But recruitment is something of an inexact science, with new signings far from guaranteed to make an immediate impact in the second half of the season. Spending big will not necessarily improve results at all, with five of the best signings of the 21/22 Premier League season having actually been among the most inexpensive arrivals of the summer.

5 best signings of the 21/22 Premier League season so far

Demarai Gray (Everton)

Everton had to cut their cloth this year after years of overspending but Rafael Benitez found a star at a low price when he brought in Gray to boost his attacking options. With five goals and two assists from 16 Premier League appearances so far, Gray has been a rare shining light in what has been a miserable first half of the campaign for the Toffees.

Gray has always posed a threat within his lightning pace but the 25-year-old has added end product to his game. Having cost Everton less than £2 million in the summer, Gray would cost several times that meagre amount if he was to be sold in the January window.

Maxwel Cornet (Burnley)

Burnley are not known for shopping abroad or for splashing the cash either but in Cornet they unearthed a player who simply looks born to play in the Premier League and is certainly among the best transfers of the 21/22 Premier League season so far. While injuries and a couple of postponements have meant Cornet has only been able to start eight matches in the league so far, he has chipped in with five goals already for Sean Dyche’s side.

The Clarets are in a hole thanks to a slow start to the season but their situation would be even worse had they not been able to bring in Cornet, a rapid player who can play on the wing or up front, where he has formed a dangerous pairing with Chris Wood. A £13 million purchase from Ligue 1 side Lyon, Cornet gives Burnley hope but with the Ivory Coast international set to be on duty at the Africa Cup of Nations in the new year, they will miss him badly.

Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace)

Palace went through a major upheaval of their squad in the summer, with a raft of new talent brought in as Patrick Vieira replaced Roy Hodgson in the dugout. Gallagher came in on loan from Chelsea and has already forced his way into the England squad, with Gareth Southgate among his growing band of admirers after a string of excellent Premier League displays.

Gallagher has six goals and three assists from 16 league games, with the 21-year-old surely having a bright future at Stamford Bridge, where he will return to fight for a place next term.

Emmanuel Dennis (Watford)

Like Burnley, Watford have not had a good start to the season but in Dennis they have a goalscorer who can be relied on to find the back of the net With seven goals from 14 starts in the Premier League, Dennis has made a bigger impact than anyone at Vicarage Road could have hoped when he arrived from Belgian side Club Brugge.

Dennis cost £3.4m million as Watford stole a march on a host of other interested clubs, with the list of potential suitors for the 24-year-old reportedly including Arsenal and Manchester United. If Claudio Ranieri is to steer the Hornets to safety, the goals of Dennis are sure to hold the key and, for that alone, he ranks among the best transfers of the 21/22 Premier League season.

Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Eyebrows were raised when Arsenal opted to splash out on signing Ramsdale, a goalkeeper who had been part of teams that had suffered Premier League relegation two years running.

But the 23-year-old has shown himself to be one of the most reliable stoppers in the division, while his distribution has been an upgrade on the Gunners’ previous number one, Bernd Leno.

Ramsdale is now being spoken of as a potential star for England, having come through the youth ranks for the Three Lions. Jordan Pickford has strong competition for his place with the World Cup now on the horizon.

It was the arrival of Ben White for £50 million that was expected to have the biggest effect on Arsenal’s back line but Ramsdale is showing his £24 million fee was a wise investment.
