6 contenders to be the next Hibs manager

Last week, the big news in Scottish football was Jack Ross leaving Hibernian after two years in charge at Easter Road. The former Sunderland manager led Hibs to 3rd in the Scottish Premiership last season and back-to-back domestic cup finals but after a run of seven defeats in nine league matches, Ross was shown the door.

So with Hibs are searching for a new manager, we take a look at the names being touted to be the next person in charge at Easter Road.

6 contenders to be the next Hibs manager

Neil Lennon

Lennon was in charge at Easter Road for two and a half seasons and during his time at Hibs, the club secured promotion from the Championship in 2017 and qualification for European football the following year.

The Northern Irish man left in 2019 by mutual consent and has been out of work since leaving Celtic in February following a disastrous title defence.

The Easter Road support would likely welcome Lennon’s return as manager as they look for someone to knock the underperforming Hibs squad into shape.

Derek McInnes

Like Lennon, McInnes has been out of work since early this year after vacating the Aberdeen hot seat in March. He was in charge at Pittodrie for eight years, consistently leading the Dons to a top-four spot and League Cup success in 2014 – their first trophy in 19 years.

Linked to Sunderland and Rangers during his time at Aberdeen, McInnes would relish a new challenge at Hibs.

Steve Kean

Ex-Blackburn Rovers boss Kean is currently employed by Hibs, joining the club as their Academy Director last month.

However, it would be a surprise if he was given the job – having been omitted from the current three-person interim management team headed by David Gray and Kean would also be an underwhelming appointment as manager among the Hibs fans.

Alex Neil

Neil would likely be the choice of most Hibs fans and he would bring vast experience to the Easter Road job. Since leaving Preston in March, Neil is constantly touted whenever a new managerial job becomes available south of the border, particularly in the Championship and League One.

And Neil has excellent knowledge of the Scottish game having guided Hamilton to promotion to the Scottish Premiership in 2014 before leaving for Norwich, leading the Canaries to the Premier League.

Neil worked with Hibernian’s chief executive Ben Kensell at Norwich and that’s a connection that Hibs fans will be hoping will be enough to lure Neil to Easter Road.

Callum Davidson

Davidson had a campaign to remember last season, leading St Johnstone to an extraordinary Cup double, a place in Europe, and 5th spot in the league. This season it’s been a trickier time for Davidson and St Johnstone though, with the Saints rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership table after just three wins from 16 matches so far.

Hibs fans would undoubtedly have welcomed Davidson as manager over the summer but whether they would be keen to see him in charge now is another question.

Robbie Fowler

Media reports suggest that the former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler is interested in the Easter Road job in what would be a curve-ball appointment.

Fowler is back in the UK following managerial spells in Australia and India, and although he’s a big name, his lack of the Scottish game would be seen as a negative amongst the Hibs fans.
