When the Overwatch League switched over to Youtube years ago, people were worried about the transition. Fans were more familiar with Twitch and Twitch had the functionality to give viewers rewards for watching their favorite game. Youtube had smaller version of this, and fans of the Overwatch League experienced this by receiving OWL tokens through watching OWL games. There were promises of more, but they had yet to be realized. However, fans may not need to wait much longer Overwatch League viewership rewards.
On the morning of Friday June 24, some lucky viewers received a notification from Battle.Net. In it they saw they have received a gift from Overwatch. The odd part – the gifts were sent with a message “Some message” from Blizzard.
It isn’t uncommon to receive gifts in B-Net. The unique part of these drops is the title itself. “DDS Inventory Test Product” doesn’t really seem like the average gift. In fact these gifts were awarded after the APAC games concluded that morning. Viewers recevied 3-4 of these test drops, and when claimed, they don’t actually have anything inside of them.

Even more interesting is the addition of the “Gifts” tab in the Overwatch main menu. While gifts have always been a part of the Blizzard client, it has yet to be directly in the Overwatch menu.
This is all to say that the Overwatch League may be turning a corner right as Overwatch 2 begins to gain traction. The long awaited promise of drops appears to just run through a trial run. Right now it looks like this was simply an accident on the end of the Overwatch League. Releasing anything that says “test” in the title normally means customers weren’t supposed to see it. As more games are played on Friday, OWL viewers will want to keep an eye out for more happy little accidents and hope that Overwatch League viewership rewards are the real deal. .
