Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3): Don’t sleep on these three OP level one spells

There are a ton of powerful spells and cantrips in Baldur’s Gate 3, but there are three spells in particular that are incredibly broken. Plus, you can get these spells as soon as the character customization screen because they are all level one spells. Here are three OP spells in Baldur’s Gate 3 that you need to have.

Note: If you want to learn about all the best spells in BG3, check out our guide. I also highly recommend learning how to recharge spell slots if you’re new to that.

3 best spells in Baldur’s Gate 3

  1. Find Familiar
  2. Sleep
  3. Guidance

The three spells that are must-haves are Find Familiar, Sleep, and Guidance. In my opinion, these three spells are overpowered in Baldur’s Gate 3. Here’s why.

Find Familiar

I think Find Familiar is the best spell in BG3 because it allows you to create a Familiar that follows you around until it dies. You can summon six different animals (see which Familiar is the best in our guide), and each Familiar offers a different attack which provides a lot of versatility. But what truly makes Find Familiar OP in BG3 is the fact that they can be the target of huge enemy attacks.

I was fighting the owlbear in the beginning of BG3 and I was using the crab Familiar to pinch my enemies so they take more damage, but the owlbear has a ton of health and hits extremely hard. Thankfully, instead of someone in my party dying immediately to the owlbear’s hit, my crab was targeted and took 30 points of damage. Because of their versatility in combat and ability to soak up tons of damage with no consequences because they can easily be summoned again, Find Familiar is amazing. Oh, and it doesn’t take a spell slot. Amazing.

Sleep

We all love sleep, but sleep in Baldur’s Gate 3 is amazing. Sleep takes a spell slot to cast, but it’s a level one spell that can be cast on up to four enemies. You can sleep enemies up to 24 HP, so if there are four enemies at six HP you can Sleep all of them, or if there are two enemies at 12 HP you can Sleep them both.

For some reason, Sleep doesn’t require a Saving Throw from your enemies. You just instantly and always Sleep your targets, which is insanely powerful. Sleep is OP because your targets are put to sleep and can’t move or do any actions for two turns. You also get advantage on all your attacks on someone who is asleep — Sleep is crazy good in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Guidance

The last amazing spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Guidance. This spells is actually a cantrip, so you can use it whenever you want with no consequences. Guidance is really strong because you can use it to gain a 1d4 bonus on any check outside of combat.

Whether you’re picking a lock, trying to persuade, or doing anything else that requires an ability check, with Guidance, you get a free 1d4 to add to your final score. Passing checks is important in BG3, and Guidance is really strong because it gives you the extra boost you need to pass ability checks.

There are other stand-out spells that I love like Shatter because it deals huge AoE damage, allowing you to one-shot groups of enemies, and Grease because it can cause groups of enemies to fall prone and works as great AoE damage if there is fire around or you cast Fire Bolt.
