Betting on the College Football Top 25 for Week 8

You have to hand it to Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea. Before the start of the 2022 college football season, Lea said that the Commodores would eventually rise to the top of college football and become the best team in the nation. That had not come to fruition by Week 7, though, as Georgia demolished Vanderbilt, 55-0. Stetson Bennett IV threw for a pair of touchdowns before heading to the bench. Some other schools that may have had misguided visions of grandeur included James Madison, who roared out to a 5-0 start and snagged the #25 spot in last week’s AP rankings. However, they lost, 45-38, to Georgia Southern last week, giving up the game-winning touchdown with 1:01 in regulation and then throwing an interception in the waning seconds. Check out this week’s AP top 25 as well as some other items that could impact your sports betting for Week 8.

The resurgence of D.J. Uiagalelei is a feel-good story – and a boon for Clemson bettors. Last year, the sophomore had a dreadful season after entering on the list of Heisman Trophy contenders and after signing some plum NIL deals. He had played well in two starts in relief of Trevor Lawrence, who missed time with COVID-19, but he just could not get out of his own way in 2021. Dabo Swinney stuck with him, and so far so good – Clemson is 7-0, and Uiagalelei has accounted for 21 touchdowns, including four in last week’s 34-28 squeaker at Florida State.

At USC, we are seeing the consequences of coaching without any real regard for defense. At OU, Lincoln Riley’s system was good enough to win the Big 12 and even put up some undefeated seasons, but then the Sooners would get exposed – badly – in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, when they ran into other teams with talented offenses but who also paid attention to stopping the opposition. Against Utah, Riley’s luck at USC appears to have run out. He did bring quarterback Caleb Williams with him from Oklahoma, and such players as Jordan Addison, Mario Williams and Travis Dye round out an all-world offense. However, Utah exposed the Trojans’ lack of a defense. USC led early, 14-0, and they would not give up the lead until 48 seconds remained in regulation, but those 48 seconds made the difference. On Utah’s last six drives, they scored five touchdowns and should have had a sixth, but they fumbled on the USC 3. In the second half, Utah had four drives that totaled 43 plays and ate up 18:32 minutes on the clock. The Utes converted six third downs and two fourth downs. USC looks to be headed to the Big Ten, but how long will it take the teams in that conference to figure out ways to beat the Trojans as well?

Do you think the Virginia Tech coaching staff would like a do-over on Hendon Hooker? They sent him to the bench late in the 2020 season, but since his transfer, he has become one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. On Saturday, he threw for 385 yards and five scores in a huge win over Alabama and leads the current Heisman Trophy rankings. Where is Virginia Tech? That’s right – 2-5 (1-4 ACC), including a loss to Miami at the Hokies’ Homecoming game.
