Pokemon GO trainers are interested in whether or not Piplup can be shiny in-game, just in time for its Spotlight Hour feature.
Piplup will be stepping into the spotlight this Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. as this week’s chosen Spotlight Hour Pokemon. The Sinnoh region water-type starter has won the hearts of trainers everywhere as the partner Pokemon of anime series sidekick, Dawn. Niantic Labs has decided to bring this Pokemon to the forefront in celebration of the new remake titles for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl—appropriately named Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Yes, Piplup can be shiny in Pokemon GO.
Piplup was originally implemented into Pokemon GO with the main release of Sinnoh Pokemon in October 2018. Its shiny variant debuted later as part of its Community Day feature in January 2020. Since then, it has been available in the wild, and has been featured in several events including 2020 Animation Week, that year’s Holiday Programming, the 2021 Sinnoh Celebration in January, and the recent Ed Sheeran collaboration event.
Shiny Piplup may be a bit difficult to tell apart from its typical counterpart due to the fact it only has one major change. Its cerulean blue head and neck plumage is tinted turquoise. Some trainers believe that the rest of its body also shares this hue—including its feet and beak.
Piplup is unsurprisingly known as the “Penguin” Pokemon. This is referenced in its PokeDex description with its “thick down” feathers protecting it from the cold—much like penguin chicks. Piplup is known to be proud and actively rejects food from strangers when offered. Its PokeDex number is #393.
