Can you pause Diablo 4? Answered

Quiet often, we need to take a small break from MMOs to get some work done, but does Diablo 4 allow you to pause the game?

Can Diablo 4 be paused?

Unfortunately, you cannot pause the game once you have logged in to a server in Diablo 4. As the servers in Diablo 4 are multiplayer, the game features constant interaction between every player on a specific server. This makes it impossible for you to pause your own game, as your presence on the server is constantly getting synchronized with other online players as well. This means, that even if you do not participate, the game will keep progressing for others, meaning enemies could kill you while you’re away from your controller or keyboard.

Moreover, Diablo 4 has an AFK timeout. If you stay idle in the game for more than 20 minutes, you will be kicked out of the server automatically. To get back into the game, you must then log in to the server again to get back to where you left off. Fortunately, there is still a way for you to go AFK if you need a little break for going to the toilet, or take a quick meal.

For that, you need to go back to the Town Portal of the main city in whichever area you are in. These main towns will be marked with a castle icon on your map. You can just press the T button on your keyboard and it will teleport you to the main city after a brief timer. However, if you change your mind before getting teleported, you can do any other movement to cancel the teleportation.

The main city is a safe place as you cannot use any kind of weapon here. Moreover, monsters and other mobs also cannot get inside these locations. Once you have arrived in the main city, there will be a blue portal around the location through which you can go back from where you came. However, it will disappear if you leave the city on foot or log in from the server.
