Cowboys – Eagles → NFL Sunday Night Game Betting Odds & Predictions for Week 6

image

If Dan Quinn does not have a head coaching gig somewhere in the NFL next season, it will be interesting to see how much Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones pays him to stay. In 2020, the Cowboys had a historically awful defense, giving up more points than any Cowboy defense had in the history of the franchise, which dates back to 1960. Jones brought in Quinn for the 2021 season, and the improvement was instant – and it has continued into 2022. The Cowboys face another tough defensive test on Sunday night as they take on a Philadelphia Eagles team that leads the NFC East by a game after a perfect 5-0 start. Jalen Hurts has emerged as a strong NFL quarterback, and the running game features three or four backs who can do damage. Will the Cowboys post yet another upset behind backup quarterback Cooper Rush, or will the Eagles impose some reality on Dallas? We have your sports betting prediction for this prime-time NFC East showdown.

Why should you bet on the Cowboys?

It seems like a year ago that Tampa Bay pummeled Dallas, 19-3, in the season opener. The Dallas defense was strong in that game, but the offense was woeful, as the line looked old and slow, and Dak Prescott couldn’t find anyone down the field. Prescott ended up going down with a thumb fracture, and things looked grim. However, the defense has gotten even better, as Dallas has beaten Cincinnati, Washington, the Giants and the Rams, covering in all four of those games.

Cooper Rush only went 10 of 16 against the Rams but has still not thrown an official interception in four starts (he did throw a pick against the Rams, but that was nullified by a defensive penalty). He has thrown for 839 yards in four games, with four touchdown passes. The running duo of Ezekiel Elliott (305 yards) and Tony Pollard (248) has collaborated to give the offense some balance. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is starting to live up to his promise, with 341 receiving yards, but the team is keeping the deep ball largely under wraps until Prescott returns. On defense, the Cowboys held the Rams ot just 323 yards and just six of 17 third-down conversions.

Why should you put your money on the Eagles?

The Eagles are the last unbeaten team in the NFL, although that almost came to an end in the desert last week, as they squeaked by the Cardinals, 20-17, after going in as 5 ½-point road favorites. It starts with the steady hand of Jalen Hurts, who has thrown for over 300 yards on two occasions this season, totaling 1,359 passing yards with a 4:2 TD:INT ratio. He has also run for 266 yards. Miles Sanders leads the team in rushing with 414 yards, picking up 4.8 yards per attempt. A.J. Brown has stacked up 436 receiving yards, and DeVonta Smith has added 352. The offense as a whole has put up at least 24 points in four of their five games so far.

The defense had some issues in Week 1 against Detroit but limited Minnesota to seven points in a stifling Week 2 win and limited Arizona to 17 points in Week 5. They are fifth in the NFL against the pass and 10th against the run. They permit 17.6 points per game, seventh-best in the NFL.

Final Score and Prediction

Given that the Eagles do so well against the run, holding opponents to 105 yards on the ground per game, Dallas will struggle to establish its offense like it has been. It is worth noting that the Cowboys have gashed some other strong rushing defenses, including those of the Bengals and Rams so far this season. The Cowboys struggle to stop the run and to keep other teams from converting chunk plays, so Philadelphia should be able to take advantage of those flaws. I predict a final score of Philadelphia 23, Dallas 20.
