St. John’s returns to action after a long layoff when it hosts DePaul at 6:30 p.m. ET Wednesday in a Big East game at Carnesecca Arena in New York.

St. John’s (8-3/0-0 Big East/8-2 home) has had four games postponed because of COVID-19 issues since losing to Pittsburgh 59-57 on Dec. 18 at Madison Square Garden. That defeat snapped the Red Storm’s three-game winning streak.

DePaul (9-3/0-2 Big East/2-1 road) lost back-to-back game, including 70-53 to then-#21 Providence last Saturday at home. The Blue Demons are underdogs in a game that will be broadcast on FS1.

DePaul Outlook

DePaul is coming off an ugly loss to Providence in which it shot just 29.8% (17 of 57) and had a season low in points.

Senior guard Javon Freeman-Liberty was the lone bright spot as he scored 22 points, including four three-point field goals. He is 16th in the nation in scoring at 20.3 points a game and has reached at least 20 points eight times.

Freeman is also stuffing the stat sheet in other categories with averages of 7.8 points, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals.

The only other DePaul player to score in double digits was senior forward Brandon Johnson, who had 10 points and five rebounds. He is averaging 11.4 points and 7.4 rebounds.

DePaul fell behind 42-17 by halftime and went 9:29 without scoring in one stretch. Providence used a 15-2 run to take an 18-7 lead then had a 22-0 spurt later in the half that stretched the advantage to 42-14.

The Blue Demons’ lack of depth showed as their bench was outscored 22-11.

Sophomore forward David Jones is having a strong season with 16.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals a game.

Junior center Nick Ongenda is averaging 10.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots.

St. John’s Outlook

Junior wing Julian Champagnie is expected to be in the lineup for St. John’s after missing the loss to Pitt while in COVID-19 protocols. His return should make a difference.

Champagnie is having an outstanding year with 20.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.5 blocked shots a game. His scoring average ranks 18th nationally.

Sophomore guard Posh Alexander is also putting up high numbers with averages of 15.9 points, 5.1 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals. His is ninth in Division I in steals and has scored in double figures in all 10 of his games.

In his first season after transferring from Rutgers, senior guard Montez Mathis is making an impact with 10.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists a game.

Against Pitt, sophomore guard Dylan Addae-Wusu had a team-high 12 points. He has scored in double digits in all five games since moving into the starting lineup at point guard while Alexander moved to off guard.

Alexander shined in a losing effort with 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Junior center Joel Soriano finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, matching his scoring output from the previous four games combined.

The Red Storm had a strong defensive effort as it held Pitt to 32.0% (16 of 50) shooting and forced 18 turnovers. However, St. John’s shot just 34.9% (22 of 63).

DePaul vs St. John’s Prediction

DePaul ended a four-game losing streak in the series in the teams’ last meeting, winning 88-83 on the road last Feb. 20. The Red Storm lost despite a 29-point, seven-rebound effort by Champagnie and 13 points from Addae-Wusu.

The Blue Demons might not win at Carnesecca Arena for a second straight season. Yet they have enough to keep it close against a St. John’s team that figures to be rusty following a long layoff.

The Pick: DePaul +5.5 (-110)
