Two days after Skate 2 joined Xbox Backwards Compatibility, EA have announced they’re shutting its servers down.
No, we’re not making this up. It’s not entirely the end of the world for the skateboard sim, since it can be played offline. But as of December 10th it’ll lose its online component, so you’ll be limited to playing it solo, rather than sharing the action with other Tony Hawk wannabes.
But it’s not just the timing that makes this stand out. EA’s Skate Twitter account retweeted the announcement that, alongside a wealth of other titles, Skate 2 could now be played on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. They then replied to this tweet announcing the shutdown of the servers.

True, it’s not uncommon for games to lose their online components. Skate 2 was released 12 years ago and it can be difficulty to justify maintaining an online service for a game that old, unless it’s hugely popular. But announcing it like this seems a little off, and it’s not surprising that EA have come in for some stick.
Additionally, we’re providing a heads up that on December 10, 2021, we will be turning off the Skate 2 online servers for PlayStation and Xbox. It’s not an easy decision and not something we take lightly. For more info check: https://t.co/98V9WH3W8C
