Bethesda is dropping a next-gen update for Fallout 4, just in time for the Fallout TV series.

Bethesda Game Studios has announced a surprising next-gen update for Fallout 4. The 2015 action-RPG is currently the last mainline entry in the series if we’re not counting Fallout 76, and it’s getting some much-needed performance upgrades for modern consoles through this new update, including 60fps gameplay and higher resolutions.

The update is also adding a new quest that features the Enclave faction, which viewers of Amazon’s Fallout TV series might be familiar with.

Fallout 4 gets next-gen update just in time for TV show

If you’re watching Amazon’s live-action Fallout TV series and starting to crave another playthrough of the main games, boy do we have good news for you. Bethesda has announced that Fallout 4 is getting a free next-gen update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, finally allowing players on modern consoles to experience the game at up to 60fps with a higher resolution.

There is a caveat, however – you’ll have to choose between a higher resolution or a higher framerate, despite this being a nine-year-old videogame. The update will introduce quality and performance modes for Fallout 4, with quality mode giving you a higher resolution and performance mode giving you 60fps gameplay at a lower resolution. On older consoles like the PlayStation 4, the update will still add a few bug fixes and stability improvements.

For PC players, the new update will add ultrawide monitor support and add fixes to Creation Kit. The game is also now available on the Epic Games Store and is Steam Deck verified. More importantly, the update also adds a sprinkling of new content, such as new weapons and power armour. It also adds a new questline called ‘Echoes of the Past’, which ropes in a classic Fallout faction called the Enclave into the game’s story.

Here’s how Bethesda describes the new story content:

Enclave Remnants brings the Pre-War cabal, The Enclave, into the Fallout 4 storyline. In this new quest, “Echoes of the Past,” can you stop The Enclave from spreading their dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth?

The new update launches on April 25. If you’d like to try Fallout 76 instead, the game is also free-to-play for a limited time on all platforms.
