FIFA 23 Will Have Exclusive Features For Current Generation Consoles

EA has revealed the current generation features of FIFA 23.

FIFA will have certain features, outlined below, that will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Google Stadia versions of the game. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will not have these additional features and the Nintendo Switch version will be a “legacy edition”, which means it will essentially be FIFA 22 with a new coat of paint.

Current generation versions will feature what EA is calling “HyperMotion2” gameplay technology. This is a combination of motion capture and machine learning. EA used motion capture suits to capture animations from two full games of professional football, one men’s match and one women’s match. They used the same motion capture technology on footballers undergoing a series of training drills to flesh out the animations further.

FIFA 23 will include a new technical dribbling system powered by the new motion capture technology. The objective of this change is to make the ball’s movement feel more responsive during a dribble. Technical dribbling is only in use for the default left-stick dribble, it won’t affect other types of dribbling.

Jockeying mechanics have been reworked and improved. Jockeying is when you’re back-tracking to defend against an attacker. You’ll now have more control over the positioning of your player, allowing you more advanced control over defensive options.

There is another new movement system that EA are stylising AcceleRATE. This system will divide players into different movement archetypes. This is to reflect the different movement styles of real-life football players. The three archetypes are called controlled (which will encompass the majority of players), explosive (fast in short bursts before slowing down) and lengthy (tall players who start slow but are fast over long distances).

There will be new shooting animations as well, which are built once again with the aforementioned motion capture technology. New goalkeeping animations are also on the way, specifically for situations when the goalkeeper is facing a player heading the ball, these are called “Kinetic Goalkeeper vs Header Battles.”

The attacking positioning section contains four specific current generation upgrades. These are better offside awareness, more separation runs, pin-down defenders (target man mechanics) and updated tactical A.I which stops players from being too stationary.

Another feature of the current generation FIFA 23 is a host of new physics. There will be new grazing deflections which occur when defenders block the ball. Additionally, a ball with enough force can push a defender’s limbs aside. Finally, you’ll be able to see a goalkeeper’s hands and fingers react to saving the ball.

Topping off the current generation upgrades are more realistic net physics and new scenes like crowd reactions and chants. You can look at all these new features in detail on EA’s developer blog post.

The Nintendo Switch version of the game won’t be receiving any of these current-generation updates but it will have updated rosters, kits, the addition of women’s football and new stadiums.

FIFA 23 will be released on September 30 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
