Guide: Best PS5 FPS Games

What are the Best PS5 FPS Games? As one of the most popular genres going, first-person shooter fans are already well served on Sony’s latest console. From competitive skirmishes through to casual shootouts, there’s certainly something for everyone. As part of our Best PS5 Games compilations, we’ve put together the Best PS5 FPS Games on the console natively. And if you’re planning to utilise PS5 backwards compatibility, please refer to our Best PS4 FPS Games guide.

Listed below is what we consider to be the Best PS5 FPS Games. These titles excel at providing intense and thoroughly entertaining experiences from the first-person perspective, all with a gun in your hand. They could be tactical operations where a single bullet means death for both you and the enemy or more casual escapades with otherworldly shields and alien weaponry. We will, therefore, try to cover as many facets as possible.

Looking to the future, other PS5 FPS games that may make it onto this list are Rainbow Six Extraction (20th January 2022, Ubisoft).

DOOM Eternal (PS5)

DOOM Eternal (PS5)DOOM Eternal (PS5)

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks / Developer: id Software

Release Date: 29th Jun 2021 (USA) / 29th Jun 2021 (UK/EU)

The best PS4 FPS game is still the best first-person shooter on PS5, for now. That is thanks to the excellent technical and graphical update id Software treated it to, bringing the hell-raising action of the Doom Slayer into the present once more. Retaining its ludicrously fast-paced and high octane action in the current generation, the game can now run at up to 120 frames-per-second or take advantage of ray tracing. Who said Bethesda isn’t still treating us? Better than ever on PS5, DOOM Eternal raised the bar for the FPS genre in 2020, and it hasn’t yet been surpassed.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege (PS5)

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege (PS5)Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege (PS5)

Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft Montreal

Release Date: 1st Dec 2020 (USA) / 1st Dec 2020 (UK/EU)

It may be a very well known quantity at this point, but the fact that Rainbow Six: Siege continues to remain relevant so long after its release is proof Ubisoft was always onto a winner. The French publisher eventually realised that and turned its tactical FPS into one of the most popular multiplayer titles on the market, forcing people to communicate in order to fulfil objectives and win the match. With an ever-growing roster of characters to play as, it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down either. Rainbow Six: Siege is here to stay, and that’s great because it’s one of the best online shooters going.

Call of Duty: Vanguard (PS5)

Call of Duty: Vanguard (PS5)Call of Duty: Vanguard (PS5)

Publisher: Activision / Developer: Sledgehammer Games

Release Date: 5th Nov 2021 (USA) / 5th Nov 2021 (UK/EU)

Call of Duty: Vanguard does very little to shake up the status quo of Call of Duty multiplayer, but what it does have going for it is a ton of maps, modes, weapons, and general content. It’s packed to the rafters with things to see and do in online skirmishes, and the single player campaign is pretty darn good too. Zombies fans should avoid until some post-launch updates come around, but for anyone wanting to battle it out online with friends, there’s not a lot better than Call of Duty: Vanguard on PS5.

Destiny 2 (PS5)

Destiny 2 (PS5)Destiny 2 (PS5)

Publisher: Bungie / Developer: Bungie

Release Date: 8th Dec 2020 (USA) / 8th Dec 2020 (UK/EU)

The shooting mechanics of Destiny 2 have always felt sublime, and that hasn’t changed as the looter shooter makes the jump to PS5. In fact, they’re enhanced further by the console version’s adaption of 60 frames-per-second. The boost helps to make gameplay feel even smoother, and if you’ve got a compatible 4K TV, you can push the PS5 version even further to 120 frames-per-second. Combined with movement features and the wealth of content it has to offer, Destiny 2 could be the only FPS you play on PS5 and you’d be very well served for the years to come.

Battlefield 2042 (PS5)

Battlefield 2042 (PS5)Battlefield 2042 (PS5)

Publisher: Electronic Arts / Developer: DICE

Release Date: 19th Nov 2021 (USA) / 19th Nov 2021 (UK/EU)

Battlefield 2042 is…okay at launch, and that’s about the best thing we can say about it. While a ton of post-launch updates will surely get it to the right place, this is a title you’ll need to wait a while on if you’re looking to invest. What’s there right now is average, with not too many maps and the standard modes to play them on. Hazard Zone is rubbish and Portal is pretty good. The shooting can feel excellent at times — in ways only a Battlefield title could — but then there are bugs and glitches that can turn joy into frustration.

Deathloop (PS5)

Deathloop (PS5)Deathloop (PS5)

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks / Developer: Arkane Studios

Release Date: 14th Sep 2021 (USA) / 14th Sep 2021 (UK/EU)

With its latest project, Arkane Studios has managed to make the shooting in Deathloop just as good as the stealth mechanics found in the developer’s previous titles. In unison, the two approaches work together seamlessly to deliver a wonderful first-person shooting undertaking amidst a time loop. Every gun feels good in your hands, and thanks to PS5 DualSense controller implementation, those triggers get a good working out with vibrations and unique characteristics. Just the first excellent FPS from publisher Bethesda to appear on this list.

Far Cry 6 (PS5)

Far Cry 6 (PS5)Far Cry 6 (PS5)

Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft

Release Date: 7th Oct 2021 (USA) / 7th Oct 2021 (UK/EU)

Ubisoft is back with another healthy serving of gaming comfort food set on the vibrant island of Yara that’s packed full of FPS action. There are bases to take over, guards to either eliminate quietly or slaughter in an all guns blazing fashion, and a ruthless dictator that needs taking down. That setup might sound just like the past four Far Cry instalments, and that’s absolutely the case. Far Cry 6 is just like its predecessors, but you can take comfort in knowing exactly what you’re going to get. It won’t set the world on fire, but Far Cry 6 is another lengthy and enjoyable romp through a beautiful setting.

Back 4 Blood (PS5)

Back 4 Blood (PS5)Back 4 Blood (PS5)

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive / Developer: Turtle Rock

Release Date: 12th Oct 2021 (USA) / 12th Oct 2021 (UK/EU)

Zombies are a bit of a cliché nowadays, but when the original creators of Left 4 Dead claim they’re going to revitalise the genre with what is essentially the series’ third entry in all but name, you stand up and listen. Back 4 Blood sort of lives up to those promises, delivering a co-op focused experience you and your friends could have a right laugh with. The campaign is fairly lengthy for something of this ilk, and with the Cards system mixing every playthrough up, there’s reason to return to the zombie-infested streets.

Metro Exodus (PS5)

Metro Exodus (PS5)Metro Exodus (PS5)

Publisher: Deep Silver / Developer: 4A Games

Release Date: 18th Jun 2021 (USA) / 18th Jun 2021 (UK/EU)

A gritty and intense single player experience, Metro Exodus is a stark reminder of what happens when weapons don’t always function properly. You’ll need to fix and repair the arsenal of protagonist Artyom just as much as you shoot them. It’s a fairly unique FPS in that regard, weighty in feel and high and in its stakes. We knew all of that having played the PS4 version, but on current-gen, it’s even better with PS5 DualSense controller implementation. There’s nothing quite like Metro Exodus on the market, so taking it for a whirl on your new console sounds like a good idea to us.
