The Greedy Shadow is the rarest of monsters in Persona 3 Reload, appearing rarely and always with fanfare. When you first enter a floor one occupies, there is a scene. The game even introduces the first one with commentary from the characters. To defeat the Greedy Shadow, you must follow its path through the dungeon, corner it, and quickly empty its life meter in combat.

On the earliest floors, the event begins with the monster running along a corridor. You follow, and when you pursue it to a fork in the road, you must guess whether the Greedy Shadow ran left or right. There are several such junctions. If you guess correctly all the way to the end, you win the prize of a battle. Otherwise, your quarry escapes. In that case, the reward you receive depends on how long you successfully pursued the creature.

In the later parts of the game, Fuuka Yamagishi gains the Tartarus Search ability. If she is navigating and has enough SP remaining, you can accept her offer to use that ability. Doing so takes the guesswork out of the equation. Then you only have to worry about winning the battle.

A fighting chance with Greedy Shadow

Combat with the Greedy Shadow should not prove difficult. You simply want to hit it hard and fast to eliminate it within a couple of rounds or so. There are multiple varieties of Greedy Hand. They are more concerned with escaping with their loot than they are mopping the floor with you.

I’ve discovered that the ones you need to fight on later floors tend to be weak against either Fire magic, or Slash damage. Your best bet is to quickly determine which weakness applies, and to use it to engineer All-Out Attacks. Supplement elemental hits with spells that enhance damage output for the party members who can strike weak points. Also use Theurgies if possible, since they ignore natural resistances. If you have anyone in your party who can inflict Almighty damage, using a spell such as Megidolaon, that’s also a winning approach.

Making Elizabeth happy

As you complete requests for Elizabeth, you eventually unlock No. 88, which requires you to defeat a Greedy Shadow. This means you must track one down (using Fuuka’s ability works fine) and defeat it in battle before it escapes. Specifically, you must defeat a Greedy Shadow that drops the Gold Medal. Find Checkmate in Harabah, the fifth block of Tartarus. When you defeat that tougher variety and show the medal to Elizabeth, she hands over your prize: the Life Aid. The uncommon skill card imparts a skill that heals some HP and SP after a victory.

Even after you fulfill Elizabeth’s request, battle Greedy Shadow enemies at every opportunity. If you need to level up quickly, they are a terrific source of EXP. They also tend to drop a lot of loot, including additional medals that sell for a lot at the Police Station.

To increase the frequency with which Greedy Hand enemies attack, visit the Fortune Teller at Club Escapade before visiting Tartarus for the evening.
