How to get the Elden Ring horse

The Elden Ring horse is one of the most intriguing new additions to the FromSoftware formula. Never before have we had the precision of the combat systems balanced out by the potential for movement offered by a horsey friend, and one of the first things you’ll want to do is unlock the horse in Elden Ring.

How do you unlock the horse in Elden Ring though? Well, thankfully for you, we already know how to do that, and we’re to tell you how you can do it, and the fastest way to manage it. Don’t worry though, it’ll all be spoiler-free, and we’ll even offer a few tips on how to get the most out of your spectral steed.

You’ll actually see dear old Torrent fairly early on after the “tutorial” boss, but you won’t get access again until you’ve done a little bit of exploring. Specifically, you’ll have to find three of the overworld Sites of Grace. These are the little golden lights you can see on the ground that act as your bonfires in The Lands Between.

Once you sit down at your third Site of Grace, a cutscene will begin that’ll end with you being given the Spectral Steed Whistle. This item allows you to summon Torrent and immediately start riding them, along with also allowing you to hop off of them whenever you want to. We recommend making use of the new pouch system to have the Spectral Steed Whistle close to hand, because there are plenty of times that Elden Ring will surprise you with a fight that you’ll likely want extra mobility in.

Torrent is good for exploring and running away, but also has excellent verticality thanks to a double jump. You can use them to platform your way down to beaches in the opening areas of Elden Ring, and you can even use their speed to allow you to hit and run massive bosses, as long as you can summon them to help.
