John Madden has passed away at 85

John Madden has passed away at 85 years old, the NFL has confirmed. John Madden had a long career within the NFL with his most notable being the Oakland Raiders coach for ten seasons, winning the Super Bowl once with them. Following his coaching career, Madden went onto sports broadcasting with a TV career spanning nearly 30 years across CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC. He also worked on radio and did so intermittently until 2018. However, many more people will be familiar with the name through EA’s Madden NFL games. John Madden first became involved with the franchise in 1988, and continued lending his voice, likeness, and American Football expertise over the years.

In a statement, the NFL wrote: Earlier today we received the sad news that the great John Madden died unexpectedly this morning. He was 85. On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”

John Madden had a lot of passion and insight for the NFL video games, with him seeing them as a way for people to get a better grasp of the sport. He saw them as more than entertainment with him saying in 2012 in an interview with Grantland,It’s a way for people to learn the game and participate in the game at a pretty sophisticated level.”
