Metaphor Refantazio Release Date And What You Need to Know

Here is everything we got on the Metaphor ReFantazio Release Date and everything else you’ll need to know about the upcoming RPG by the creators of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei.

Metaphor ReFantazio has a lot of weight behind it. The upcoming RPG by all the Atlus heavyweights is the first new IP by the masterminds behind SMT and Persona under their newly formed Studio Zero. After the blockbuster success of Persona 5 and the so-so reception of Shin Megami Tensei 5 (which was made by a different team), the trio of Katsura Hashino, Shigenori Soejima, and Shoji Meguro unite for another RPG epic.

There is much to talk about regarding Metaphor ReFantazio, so we’ve collected all the info we could find.

Metaphor ReFantazio Release Date

According to Atlus’ official announcements, Metaphor Refantazio is expected to be released in the Fall of 2024. The jury is still out on an exact date, but Atlus always releases their big titles in October/November which we expect to be the case for Metaphor.

Metaphor ReFantazio Platforms

Metaphor is confirmed to be released on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. A version for the Nintendo Switch is still up for debate, but going by recent trends it wouldn’t be unlikely for the game to be ported to the follow-up of the Switch rumored to come out later this year.

Metaphor ReFantazio Game Pass

As of writing, Metaphor Refantazio will not be part of the Xbox Game Pass. This might change in the lead-up to the release, as Atlus has often partnered with Microsoft in the past.

Metaphor ReFantazio Staff

What makes the prospect of Metaphor ReFantazio so exciting is its staff. The studio mostly comprises the team responsible for Shin Megami Tensei and its more popular spinoff, Persona. After riding that train to success for the better part of two decades this is the first new IP by the all-star trio of director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro.

The entire team comprises members of the new Studio Zero which was formed around core members of the creative team behind the Persona and SMT series. The goal of this team was to create new IPs and gameplay experiences while the Persona team, P-Studio, and the SMT team, Team Maniax would continue to work on established IPs with new talent as seen in the Persona 3 Reload/Remake.

Metaphor ReFantazio Story

The story of Metaphor ReFantazio is a classical fantasy RPG that aesthetically borrows heavily from high fantasy anime of the 90s. Unlike Persona or Shin Megami Tensei, Metaphor is a utopian fantasy world with ideals that could never prosper in reality.

The Protagonist sets out on an adventure to find a cure for his best friend, the prince of Euchronia. He and his allies travel the kingdom and participate in a contest that will decide the future of that kingdom or even that world itself.

We don’t know much more about it, but the way the latest trailer talks about fantasy, novels and so on implies a very Shin Megami Tensei-esque twist to all of it. After all, the game is called Metaphor and Katsura Hashino is anything but subtle when it comes to the theming of his games.

Metaphor ReFantazio Gameplay

On the gameplay front it seems like Metaph is going to be a big RPG featuring the same stylistic menus and gameplay beats we’ve seen in their other games. The turn-based combat and some of the skills return, only this time you’re not collecting Personas and Devils to fight at your side, you’re gonna transform yourself into them.

In Persona, you’d have combat and socializing split and in Shin Megami Tensei you’d focus solely on dungeon crawling and number crunching. From what we’ve seen, Metaphor ReFantazio asks what would happen if you put all these elements into one big RPG. The calendar system of the Persona games will also make a return.

Players will always be on the clock between major story beats, picking between various tasks that need to be completed while traveling around the kingdom.

This is everything we know about Metaphor Refatazio. We’ll have more on Atlus’ next RPG heavyweight as the approach the release in the Fall. More on Atlus and the latest in games and esports stick with ESTNN
