Warhammer The Old World Release Date

Warhammer The Old World Release Date

Alongside the reveals at the Warhammer Day 2023 event, we got news of the Warhammer The Old World Release date…

We got our first look at Bretonnia at the event, but it was the reveal of the 2024 “early” release date that took the event by storm. Crucially, we know it will be the “first major release” of the year, so likely in late January. We’ve been promised more information before the end of the year, alongside what army will launch alongside Bretonnia and we suspect what the launch box looks like.

From what we’ve heard and seen so far, it looks like GW are going big on the Old World, as they look to recapture fans who left the hobby after Warhammer Fantasy was killed off. While Age of Sigmar has been a huge hit, it’s clearly a distant second behind Warhammer 40k. Now, how these three games can live side-by-side-by-side remains to be seen, with GW also making it clear AoS and Old World won’t share kits. In fact, the recent Cities of Sigmar set was an indication that the plan is very much to keep the two games separate. Though, we suspect many (including myself) will just proxy the Cities of Sigmar into the Old World in one way or another.

Update – 20th of December – Today we got news of the first Old World book, and with it, we also had a few sources suggest that January 20th will be the date we can finally buy Warhammer the Old World. December 26th will likely see this confirmed either way.

Warhammer The Old World Release Date – What we know so far

Release date

Again, let’s say for now that late January 2024 is likely to be the case. This gives GW the next two months to drop more reveals including at the very least the second army.

Kingdom of Bretonnia Army

Kingdom of Bretonnia Duke on Royal Pegasus

The first major reveal is one of the many hero units, and it’s a pretty special one at that. The unit can also be built as a Baron, so the kit has a lot of variety. You can also build it as a Battle Standard Bearer.

Other factions

Below are the key factions for the lore of Warhammer Old World as it starts, and most likely in the future.

  • Empire of Man
  • Orc & Goblin Tribes
  • Dwarfen Mountain Holds
  • Warriors of Chaos
  • Kingdom of Bretonnia
  • Beastmen Brayherds
  • Wood Elf Realms
  • Tomb Kings of Khemri
  • High Elf Realms

Again, no real surprises; Games Workshop are obviously playing it safe here with the factions that will likely get some new models or at least re-prints of models. But for now, you can go out and buy old Warhammer models with at least some level of security that will have a purpose in the Old World.

The above armies will be a core part of Old World, with rules launching alongside the release of Warhammer Old World. GW did confirm that the above factions will include new miniatures alongside the return of classic kits.

Warhammer Old World Factions – Rules Only

Other factions, like those listed below, will not be part of the game’s narrative, but will, however, have a set of rules. So while these factions won’t have the narrative implications, there probably won’t be any issues.

  • Dark Elves
  • Skaven
  • Vampire Counts
  • Daemons of Chaos
  • Ogre Kingdoms
  • Lizardmen
  • Chaos Dwarfs

Know as “legacy armies”, these factions will have their rules available for free via PDFs. GW sees this as payback for fans who have old armies sitting on shelves. Though, these factions will only have old units represented, “new” Age of Sigmar models in these ranges will not be support for the “legacy” factions.
