MLB Power Rankings July 25

Every week MLB teams will be ranked for the rest of the season. Here are the 2022 MLB power rankings for the week of July 25.

1. New York Yankees

Record: 66-31

Previous Ranking: 1

The Yankees remain in the top spot. The gap between them and the rest of the league continues to grow closer and closer though. They are one of the biggest teams entering “buy mode” as the trade deadline draws closer.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers

Record: 64-30

Previous Ranking: 2

The Dodgers are expected to be buyers at the trade deadline, like they are every year. They could target a multitude of positions but expect the Dodgers to be in on the Reds’ ace, Luis Castillo. He would cement that Dodgers starting rotation as the best in the league.

3. Houston Astros

Record: 64-32

Previous Ranking: 3

The Astros have inched closer and closer to the top of the league. They have widened the gap between themselves and the rest of the league, only chasing the Yankees and Dodgers now. Nobody wants to play Houston in October.

4. New York Mets

Record: 59-37

Previous Ranking: 4

The Mets are desperate to get healthy. The season is halfway done, and their best player has yet to make his season debut. Good news though, he (Jacob DeGrom) has made a few rehab starts and is expected to be back soon.

5. Atlanta Braves

Record: 58-39

Previous Ranking: 5

The Braves will be buyers at the trade deadline. They have a few glaring holes. They could use improvement in the outfield, at the backend of the starting rotation, and in the bullpen.

6. San Diego Padres

Record: 54-43

Previous Ranking: 6

It seems like every week, we discuss the return of Fernando Tatis. Yet, he has still not made his 2022 debut. At this point, he has increased his intensity in his drill work and is looking to make a return pretty soon.

7. Tampa Bay Rays

Record: 52-43

Previous Ranking: 7

CY Young favorite, Shane McClanahan struggled in the All-Star game. He gave up 4 hits and 2 runs in his one inning of work, with Paul Goldschmidt belting a solo home run.

8. Toronto Blue Jays

Record: 53-43

Previous Ranking: 10

The Blue Jays won a baseball game by a score of 28 to 5. Yeah. Not a typo. On a different note, Alek Manoah has burst on the scene as one of the most entertaining pitchers in the game. This is backed by his incredible inning in the All-Star game in which he was mic’d up for the entire inning.

9. Milwaukee Brewers

Record: 53-43

Previous Ranking: 8

The Brewers aren’t the most exciting team in baseball, but they are one of the best. For the last few years, they have been a staple among the league’s best teams and that has yet to change. They look to win the NL Central in 2022.

10. Seattle Mariners

Record: 51-45

Previous Ranking: 9

The Mariners cooled off after the All-Star break, losing the first two games to start the second half. Julio Rodriguez stole the show in the Home Run Derby by hitting over 80 home runs and finishing as runner up.

11. Minnesota Twins

Record: 52-44

Previous Ranking: 11

The Twins are buyers at the deadline, needing to make a move to put them among the leagues best. Their biggest hole is pitching. Luis Castillo of the Reds should be their biggest priority at the deadline.

12. St. Louis Cardinals

Record: 51-46

Previous Ranking: 12

The Cardinals remain just a step behind the Brewers in the NL Central. Paul Goldschmidt has continued his absolute tear of the league as he widens the gap in the NL MVP race.

13. Philadelphia Phillies

Record: 49-46

Previous Ranking: 14

Nick Castellanos was asked if he heard the boos after he struck out recently. His answer brought laughs to many baseball fans when he said, “Nah man, I lost my hearing.”

14. San Francisco Giants

Record: 48-47

Previous Ranking: 15

It has been a disappointing season for the Giants, but, even with how disappointing it has been, they are just 2 games out of a Wild Card spot. The season is far from over for San Francisco.

15. Cleveland Guardians

Record: 48-46

Previous Ranking: 16

Triston McKenzie has been spectacular this month, with a real shot to win AL Pitcher of the Month. In four starts, he’s thrown 26.66 innings and allowed just 13 hits and only 1 run. He has struck out 27 batters over that stretch.

16. Boston Red Sox

Record: 48-48

Previous Ranking: 13

The beginning of the second half has been a nightmare for Boston. Toronto gave them a beating as bad as any, by a score of 28-5 and then Alek Manoah shut down the Red Sox in the next game. A nightmare start to the second half for Boston.

17. Baltimore Orioles

Record: 47-48

Previous Ranking: 18

Who would have thought that the Baltimore Orioles would float around .500 at the beginning of the second half? The Orioles are the only thing standing in the way of the AL East having FIVE teams finish with a .500 record or better.

18. Chicago White Sox

Record: 48-48

Previous Ranking: 17

The White Sox are in a tough spot. They have the talent to compete but haven’t put the pieces together yet. This will cause them to be hesitant to be sellers at the deadline, but also will cause them to not want to go deep into their farm system to be buyers.

19. Miami Marlins

Record: 45-50

Previous Ranking: 19

It seems like the Marlins have been just one step behind for a majority of the season. With pitching as electric as theirs, they should hold a record better than what they have so far. The future is bright in Miami.

20. Texas Rangers

Record: 43-51

Previous Ranking: 20

The Rangers are too good to blow their roster up and rebuild, but not good enough to contend with the league’s best. They need to make a few upgrades, either at the deadline or in the offseason.

21. Colorado Rockies

Record: 43-53

Previous Ranking: 21

Jose Iglesias and CJ Cron are two names that could garner attention from other teams as the trade deadline approaches. The Rockies should make a few moves but stay away from entering a full on rebuild.

22. Arizona Diamondbacks

Record: 42-53

Previous Ranking: 23

The Diamondbacks made a move in the offseason to acquire Mark Melancon, who was a shutdown reliever last season. This year, he has been anything but that, sporting an ERA that is 3 runs higher than last year.

23. Los Angeles Angels

Record: 40-55

Previous Ranking: 22

There was a rumor that some teams have inquired about trading for Shohei Ohtani, one of the best players in the league. These rumors were, rightfully so, shut down pretty soon after they were started.

24. Pittsburgh Pirates

Record: 40-56

Previous Ranking: 24

The Pirates are third in the NL Central, surprising basically everybody. Even though they are far from a playoff contender, to be third in the division is a huge step in the right direction.

25. Cincinnati Reds

Record: 36-58

Previous Ranking: 26

The Reds have the most valuable asset in the MLB at the trade deadline, staring pitcher Luis Castillo. They are expected to get a good haul in return for the ace. Other players that they could deal include Tyler Mahle, Brandon Drury, and Tommy Pham.

26. Detroit Tigers

Record: 38-58

Previous Ranking: 25

The end of the season for the Tigers will basically be a farewell tour for the legendary first baseman, Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera looks to get a deserving send-off, as he has anchored that franchise for upwards of a decade.

27. Chicago Cubs

Record: 38-57

Previous Ranking: 28

The Cubs may enter total rebuild mode again this year, much like they did last year. They have a few pieces that hold trade value to some of the better teams in the league. It will be an interesting few weeks for Chicago as the trade deadline approaches.

28. Kansas City Royals

Record: 38-57

Previous Ranking: 27

The Royals desperately need a promising second-half from their rookie sensation, Bobby Witt Jr. As a team, this season is basically concluded. But the development and progress of the younger guys on the team is crucial.

29. Oakland Athletics

Record: 35-63

Previous Ranking: 29

The Athletics didn’t charter a flight to the All-Star game for their lone All-Star, Paul Blackburn. So, the Astros invited him to fly on their flight with their All-Stars. Just a little feel-good story for the brotherhood inside the MLB.

30. Washington Nationals

Record: 32-65

Previous Ranking: 30

The Juan Soto drama has done nothing but get worse in the past few days. The Nationals refused to charter a flight for the young star to the Home Run Derby. Soto responded by winning the entire derby. I don’t see these sides coming to an agreement anytime soon.
