Monaco 2 brings back the co-op heist ’em up for a second job

Monaco 2 has been revealed, a sequel to the beloved co-op heist game Monaco: What’s Your Is Mine. The sequel is in development by Pocketwatch Games and creator Andy Schatz, but it’s really taking the heisting concept to a whole new level. Monaco 2 is still in early development, with only PC as a confirmed release platform.

Where the original Monaco was a linear adventure, in which you assembled a crew of misfits to pull off an audacious series of heists and capers, the sequel is taking a different tack. This is going down the path of a more freeform heist simulator, testing you and your co-op buddies through procedurally generated levels that have been cooked up by an AI mastermind.

Getting the procedural generation right will be key, with the intention being that the generated levels will still feel like real places for you to sneak through and find your path to the prize. You might have a goal to steal a diamond from a bank vault, but you could scale the walls, come down from the ceiling, tunnel under the bank vault, and more. The game will still have a top-down view, but the camera will now allow for full 3D environments and more verticality.

The original game had a tendency for sneaky initial attempts at a level to devolve into mad chaos, and that’s sure to be the case here. There’s an emphasis on replayability and being able to (start off) with different approaches.

With the game still very much in development, Pocketwatch is actually looking to be as open about their work as possible. They will be streaming every week (Tuesday – Friday at 2:30-5:30pm PT) on the Pocketwatch Twitch channel, and a first developer log has also been released for the game, showing off some of the intentions of what they’re creating.

One curious twist about the game, by the way, is that it fits in with Humble’s intention to invest more heavily in Indie games. The publisher has acquired the rights to the Monaco franchise from creator Andy Schatz, though he’s still on board as creative director for the game.
