Why should you bet on the 49ers?

The 49ers took the game to Los Angeles last week, showing the blueprint that opponents will need if they want to slow down the Rams: establish the running game and then break out some medium-range routes once the Rams load the box. The problem for the 49ers is that this has not worked against anyone else. Of the players who started the year on the 53-man roster, 14 are injured. Elijah Mitchell has emerged as a force in the running game, carrying the ball 27 times for 91 yards in the win over the Rams.

This meant that Jimmy Garoppolo was able to drive the bus instead of having to win the game as a gunslinger. He was 15 of 19 for 182 yards and a pair of scores, with Deebo Samuel’s 97 yards on five catches leading the way. He had a receiving and a rushing touchdown. Once the Rams realized they had to pass to catch up, the 49ers capitalized with a pair of interceptions. If you like San Francisco, you think they can replicate this on Sunday.

Why should you put your money on the Jaguars?

Since September 19, the only other team San Francisco has beaten besides the Rams is Chicago. They gave up at least 28 points in four of the five losses in that stretch, as their defense could not shut anyone down. The Jaguars went to Indianapolis last week and hed close with the Colts, falling 23-17. The week before, they held a white-hot Buffalo offense to just nine points.

One central problem for the Jaguars remains their offensive line. Trevor Lawrence had to take three sacks and spent a lot of the game running for his life. His numbers were not slid (16 of 35 for 162 yards, no touchdowns — but no interceptions). However, it’s hard to fault him for his numbers when he does not have time to drop back and settle in the pocket. The Jaguar’s defense is figuring things out, and if they can shut down the Bills at home, they can bottle up Jimmy G as well.

I think that San Francisco can eke out this road win, but I’m not sure I like that point spread. I’m more confident in the “under,” as I don’t see the 49ers turning this into a laugher either. So I’m taking the under with a final score of San Francisco 20, Jacksonville 16.
