NFL Week 6 → Commanders vs Bears Thursday Night Game Betting Odds & Predictions

After last week’s soporific matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos, which had the audacity to go overtime with the score 9-9 at the end of regulation, the social media response was brutal. This week’s Thursday night affair does not look much better, as the 1-4 Washington Commanders visit the 2-3 Chicago Bears. Washington is the latest team to deal with the inconsistency of Carson Wentz, who threw for 359 yards last week against Tennessee, but who also threw an interception on the Titans’ two-yard line to seal the loss. Chicago has virtually no draft-level talent around second-year quarterback Justin Fields, and the team’s pedestrian offense has become extremely predictable. Why should you bet on the Commanders?

Washington’s offense has had some bright spots this season. Wentz led a tremendous comeback in Week 1 to take down Jacksonville, and he delivered on multiple throws against the Titans before the late turnover. Terry McLaurin has 19 catches for 326 yards and a touchdown, and Curtis Samuel has 32 catches for 281 yards and a pair of scores. The running game is only picking up 3.2 yards per carry, and some improvement on that side of the ball could take a lot of the pressure off Wentz and the passing game.

Chicago has not covered in nine straight games against Washington at Soldier Field. While the Washington defense has been generous at times, Chicago lacks the offensive firepower, both in the running and receiving game, to put up a lot of points on the Commanders. The Bears’ two wins have come against San Francisco in a maelstrom that saw the Soldier Field turf become a giant slip’n’slide and against a Houston team that is very limited in its offensive talent.

Why should you put your money on the Bears?

Losses to the Giants and the Vikings have marred a nice 2-1 start. The loss to Minnesota was especially frustrating, as the Bears came back from a 21-3 deficit to go ahead by a point with 9:26 left in regulation, but then the Vikings added a touchdown just before the two-minute warning to run away with the win. Chicago’s offense is ranked #31 in the NFL right now, better only than woeful Carolina. Justin Fields has an ugly 3:4 TD:INT ratio, but the line in front of him has not helped him much.

Tailback Khalil Herbert has averaged 5.9 yards per carry, and he will need to produce against Washington, as the Commanders are just #19 in the NFL on defense, permitting 346 yards per game. If you like the Bears, then you likely think Wentz will melt down earlier than usual, although the Chicago pass rush has not been the type to force many turnovers this season.

Final Score and Prediction

I’m more confident in this game staying under than I am in picking a side in this tug-o-war of futility. I see both sides getting into the end zone, but not much more than that. I predict a final score of Washington 17, Chicago 9.
