No Rest for the Wicked Weapon and Gear System Explained

In this article, we’ll explore the in-depth weapon and gear system implemented in No Rest for the Wicked. 

As with an Action RPG, itemizing your character with the right weapon and armor is a core part of No Rest for the Wicked. This brand-new ARPG by Moon Studios, the folks behind the Ori games, offers plenty of customization, allowing you to build your character any way you see fit.

Feel like playing as a mage? Go full wizard with a sorcerer’s robe and staff.

Want to play like a Knight? Two-handed Claymores are always viable.

But we’re not here to talk about the best weapons or armor today. Instead, what we’ll focus on is the item rarity, gear system, and the upgrade features for your equipment. So, let’s dive in!

No Rest for the Wicked Item and Weapon Rarity

No Rest for the Wicked is still in its early access. At this stage, there are around 22 weapons available in the game. But they can drop in different rarities. And as it turns out, the rarity of your weapon plays a huge role in its overall quality. With the right perks and gems in the weapon, even a relatively weak one can become a damage dealing monster!

There are four rarity tiers of weapons that you can come across in No Rest for the Wicked, each represented by a color:

1. Common:

Common items are represented by the color white and are the easiest to find in the world. But don’t mistake these common items for those trash weapons and gears you find in other games of the same genre. Common weapons in No Rest for the Wicked offers the most customization options in terms of crafting, socketing enchantments, and upgrading.

2. Rare:

Rare weapons are a tier above Common and are represented by blue. These weapons come with positive enchantments to add a bit of extra boost to your character. 

For instance, on our playthrough, we bought a Blue Stone Tusk Ring from the merchant at Sacrament, which gave us a 19% boost in our armor. The bonus is usually random, so you might not get the same enchantment we did.

3. Cursed:

Purple or Cursed items and weapons in No Rest for the Wicked are a bit odd. Similar to Blue gears, they also come with positive enchantments. In most cases, the enchantment quality in Purple items are even stronger than Blue ones.

However, these items will also come with a negative perk to compensate for it. These items are great to achieve specific builds as you progress through the campaign.

4. Unique:

Finally, we have Unique items in the game that feature the color Gold. As the name suggests, they are completely unique, designed specifically by the game devs with specific enchantments and perks. 

They usually drop from bosses or are found in hidden locations throughout the world of No Rest for the Wicked.

No Rest for the Wicked Armor Gear System

In any souls-like games, the weight of your armor can make or break your gameplay experience. The heavier the armor you put on, the harder it is for your character to move and dodge through enemy attacks.

In No Rest for the Wicked, you’ll see a similar system being used for your armor and weight. When your total weight of equipped weapons, and gears are under 30% of your total weight, you’re in the Light Weight Class. You can perform a Quickstep with your dodge button. 

When your total weight exceeds 30% but is still under 60%, you’ll be in the Normal Weight Class. You can roll with the dodge button, but you’ll be slower.

Once your Equip Load exceeds 60%, you’ll be in the Heavy class and have the bulkiest roll. But now, you’ll be able to perform a Shoulder Barge attack by pressing the V button on your PC.

Remember, the heavier your Equip Load, the harder it will be to move around freely during combat. Of course, you can double down on this idea and go with the bulkiest armor with the highest defense and simply face tank enemy hits with the right build. But even so, we recommend investing some points into the stats Stamina and Equip Load.

No Rest for the Wicked Crafting and Enchanting

Crafting and upgrading your weapon is essential if you want to keep them relevant as you progress through the story. And these mechanics are pretty polished, albeit a bit complicated, in No Rest for the Wicked.

To upgrade your weapons, you need to talk to Fillmore, but you need to complete his quest line first. After you finish his quest, he’ll be available in Sacramento. Talk to him and select the Upgrade option to upgrade your weapons.

Additionally, a second NPC, Eleanor, can help Enchant, Infuse, or Socket runes into your equipment to make them stronger. You can find her just left from Fillmore’s smithy. 

How to Repair Equipment in No Rest for the Wicked

In No Rest for the Wicked, you’ll see that every single equippable gear has a durability number attached to it. And as you keep progressing and slaying enemies, you’ll notice that the durability number continues to decrease.

Once the durability of your gear drops to zero it becomes absolutely useless both offensively and defensively. But you can repair them to reset their durability back to full.

Here again, Fillmore comes to the rescue. When you find him first in Mariner’s Keep, he won’t charge anything to repair your items. However, once you kill the first boss, Warrick the Torn, he will move to Sacramento where he will demand payment for his services.

No Rest for the Wicked is a complex game with an extremely in-depth crafting and gear system. We’ll be frank; the weapon and gear system here did feel pretty overwhelming when we first started out. But after a while, it all started to make sense.

So stick to it and keep playing the game. You’ll get the hang of it eventually.
