Richmond Outlook

Richmond has one of the best defensive players in all of college basketball in senior guard Jacob Gilyard. His 391 steals are the most in Division I history and his 3.,3 a game this season tops the nation.

Gilyard’s five steals helped Richmond overcome a 41-24 deficit to beat Toledo. He also had 13 points and seven assists while making four three-pointers.

Gilyard has season averages of 12.0 points and 5.5 assists. He has scored in double figures in five of his last six games.

Junior forward Tyler Burton is having an outstanding year, averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 45.5% from three-point range and 78.6% on free throws.

Burton just missed a double-double Saturday as he had 17 points and nine rebounds. He has finished with double-digit points in nine of the last 10 games.

Senior forward Grant Golden is having a fine all-round season with averages of 15.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Senior guard Nick Sherrod had one of his best games of the season Saturday with 14 points, five rebounds and four three-pointers. Sherrod, who miss last season because of a knee injury, was two points off his season high.

Richmond won despite shooting 35.5% (22 of 62). The Spiders rolled up 48 points in the second half to rally for the victory after scoring a season-low 24 points in the opening 20 minutes.

North Carolina State Outlook

NC State took a tough loss against Purdue. The Wolfpack led by 13 points midway through the second half and never trailed in regulation but was outscored 16-6 in overtime.

Freshman guard Terquavion Smith had a breakout game with a season-high 21 points. He is averaging 12.0 points in his first collegiate season.

Sophomore guard Dereon Seabron continued his fine season with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. He has scored in double figures in all nine games this season while averaging 19.7 points.

Seabron is ninth in the nation in rebounding with 10.7 a game and is also averaging 3.1 assists and 2.2 steals.

Seabron’s contributions have been a major boon to North Carolina State as junior forward Manny Bates – the Wolfpack’s top interior player –sustained a season-ending dislocating right shoulder in the opening-night win over Bucknell.

Senior forward Jericole Hellems hit double figures for the seventh straight game with 12 points. For the season, he is averaging 14.7 points and 4.0 rebounds.

In all, five Wolfpack players are scoring in double figures as sophomore guard Cam Hayes (11.6) and Casey Morsell (11.1) are also part of a balanced offense.

Hayes had 12 points and five rebounds against Purdue. Morsell is in his first season after transferring from ACC rival Virginia.

NC State allowed Purdue to make half its 60 field goal attempts and was also outrebounded 48-35.

The Wolfpack is fifth in the nation in free throw attempts with 23.9 a game.

Richmond vs North Carolina State Prediction

The teams are meeting for the first time since NC State won 84-72 during the 2014-15 season. Look for this game to be closer.

Wolfpack coach Kevin Keatts said at the beginning of the season he believed his team could play with anyone in the country. His players proved that against Purdue and should carry that momentum over.
