The 2022 Rio Open is just one of four ATP tournaments taking place just this week. The tournament is an ATP 500 event, and will be taking place for the first time since 2020. The event did not happen last year due to the pandemic.

There’s a good mix of current and former top ranked players competing, including players who have won this tournament in the past. 2022 Australian Open semifinalist has been awarded the first seed, and World No. 8 Casper Ruud is the second seed, and favorite to win the tournament.

Top Half

25-year old Berrettini should be entering this tournament feeling pretty good about himself. The Italian just had a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, where he lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Because of his first seed ranking, Berrettini has received a bye in the first round. He’ll open his tournament up against either Thiago Monteiro of Brazil or a qualifier.

Fifth seed and defending champion Cristian Garin is also in the top half. The Chilean has struggled so far this year, not making it past the third round at the Aussie Open, and losing his first match at the Cordoba Open.

Garin will be looking to be the first Rio Open champion to win back-to-back titles. The 25-year old will open his tournament up against Argentine Federico Coria.

Bottom Half

Top players that are in the bottom half of the tournament include favorite Ruud, third seed Diego Schwartzman, and sixth seed Lorenzo Sonego.

Ruud, who had a career-defining 2021, was able to continue the momentum and had a great start to the season, didn’t go on to compete at the Australian Open due to injury. But he made sure to make up for it, and entered into the Argentina Open, where he’s currently competing in the finals.

Also currently competing in the Argentina Open at the moment is third seed Diego Schwartzman. After a less than ideal for the Argentine player at the Aussie Open, he pieced together a semifinal appearance, and now final appearance, and a possible title prior to the Rio Open.

Both Ruud and Schwartzman are receiving a bye in the first round. Ruud could then open his tournament up against either Francisco Cerundolo or Benoit Paire. And Schwartzman will play his first match in the second round against either Juncheng Shang or Pedro Martinez.

Best Bet

Berrettini and Ruud definitely seem like the two that could go the distance in this tournament. 23-year old Ruud has shown that he is a force when it comes to clay courts. But he hasn’t had success beyond the ATP 250 level.

Berrettini has found success in the past. He’s the first male born in the 1990s to reach at least the quarterfinals in all four Grand Slams.

Schwartzman is also someone to keep an eye on. He has experience and success in Rio, having won the tournament in 2018.

But given Berrettini’s form, and Ruud looking to find his feet here in 2022, look for Berrettini to go the distance.

Best Bet: Berrettini (+450)
