While Sifu drew praise from many critics, it also divided opinion with its unique take to difficulty. The core martial arts combat was fantastic, but progress could be stymied by the way that each death saw one year added to your character’s age, meaning that you could find an attempt at a dead end.
Not long after launch, Sloclap released an update to make those boss fights a little less difficult, but at release Jason wasn’t as keen as other reviewers – in our Sifu review, he scored the game a 4 out of 10:
“Sifu is a game that I wanted to love. I had high hopes for it being one of my game of the year contenders, but it left me feeling intensely deflated instead. It’s a game that confuses the precise mechanical difficulty of Sekiro with a forced difficulty brought on by simply giving bosses armour. I find myself irrationally angry with Sifu. Sifu is a game that had exceptional potential, but squandered it on the wrong lessons.”
Sifu is the second title from French game developer, Sloclap. Their debut game, Absolver, was similarly ambitious in its attempts to create a stylish hit with martial arts combat at its core.
Sifu is out now for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. A physical release is due alongside the new update. Sifu Vengeance Edition will bundle a copy of the game with a steelbook, 3 exclusive lithographs, a 48-page artbook, and a digital soundtrack.
