Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin drops one last weird trailer

Square Enix has dropped a new Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin trailer ahead of the game’s March 18, 2022 release date.

Clocking in at almost five minutes, there’s plenty of footage to pore over here including a mix of high octane action and cinematic sequences. Rounding out this bizarre trailer we have an odd song choice building towards that final outro. Give it a watch below.

We get a much closer look at some of the key characters who feature in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. Front and centre, we have protagonist Jack Garland, flanked by a number of companions we’ll meet on his quest to destroy Chaos. It’s hard to get beat on what’s actually happening as we meander between supposedly intimate character moments and what appear to be gold-tinted dream sequences.

The highlight of this final trailer is the menagerie of boss monsters on show who all seem to have a certain Team Ninja energy to them.

A spin-off of the original turn-based JRPG, Stranger adopts a much darker tone compared to the original Final Fantasy game. From what we’ve played, Jack and his party aren’t a particularly cheery bunch compared to most Final Fantasy protagonists, though maybe there’s a good reason for that. The big draw here is the combat gameplay, given Team Ninja’s track record of success with Nioh and Nioh 2. Punchy yet tactical with plenty of class-swapping customisation, it will hopefully tide us over as we await Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Remake Part II.

With Final Fantasy XVI quietly waiting in the wings, this may be only big Final Fantasy release of 2022. We were meant to receive an update on the JRPG sequel last year – however, due to delays in development, new reveals have had to be postponed. In a message posted by director, Naoki Yoshida confirmed that COVID-19 has stalled development of Final Fantasy XVI by nearly six months. You can read the full message below.

The world of Final Fantasy XVI is called Valisthea and it is a land covered in Mothercrystals that release aether and allow people to use magicks. Around each Mothercrystal different nations have risen. They have co-existed but now a Blight is going across the land and shattering the peace that was plentiful. You can read more about the six realms that make up Valisthea, which are called The Grand Duchy of Rosaria, The Holy Empire of Sanbreque, The Kingdom of Waloed, The Dhalmekian Republic, The Iron Kingdom, and The Crystalline Dominion, here.
