Street Fighter 6 will have Crossplay and Rollback Netcode on Launch

One of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to upcoming fighting games is whether or not they’ll feature rollback netcode and crossplay. “Street Fighter 6” director Takayuki Nakayama confirmed that Street Fight 6 will have Crossplay and Rollback Netcode in an interview with IGN.

Fans and industry members immediately asked whether the game will have these features.

Although “Street Fighter V” used rollback netcode, its biggest criticism was for having less than stellar netcode for most of the game’s lifespan.

Nakayama also stated the netcode will be built from the ground up.

What is rollback netcode?

Rollback netcode ensures players will have a much more stable online experience. Fighting games and the community pushed to make this the standard, especially due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Fighting games at a smaller budget have implemented excellent netcode such as “Skullgirls,” and Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid.”

Capcom seems to aim for a close-to-perfect experience with their new implementation of rollback netcode.

Crossplay

“Street Fighter V” was previously a PS4 console exclusive title, with crossplay enabled with PC players.  However, as “Street Fighter 6” is also releasing on Xbox Series S and X consoles this time, Xbox players will likely be able to play with Playstation and PC players for the first time.

Crossplay has also been a feature that the fighting game community has been advocating for all new fighting games.

Smaller titles such as “Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid,” and “Brawlhalla” feature-complete crossplay with all platforms. This will be a first for a major franchise.

Hopefully, this will convince other developers for major franchises such as the next “Tekken,” and “Mortal Kombat” will follow suit.

Crossplay connects more players and faster, regardless of the choice of platform. PlayStation and PC have been the popular choice of platforms for the fighting game community. Typically PlayStation consoles are the usual console that is in use in high-level tournaments such as EVO.

Implementation of rollback netcode

Capcom implemented rollback for their legacy games in their collections such as the “Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection.” Rollback will also be implemented in the upcoming “Capcom Fighting Collection.” to be released on Jun. 24.

Other companies have done the same, patching older games in the series with rollback netcode, bringing new life to classic fighting games. Which many fans praised for not leaving them to be unplayable and forgotten.

Nakayama states Capcom will get into more detail regarding rollback and crossplay in the future. Currently, they are not ready to state more at this time.
