The Last of Us Part II Remastered is Getting a Roguelike Mode

It has been years since Naughty Dog started The Last of Us in 2013. Players applauded the action-adventure shooter for its immersive story, loveable characters, and impressive combat. Although Part II received its fair share of criticisms, many can agree the sequel’s gameplay is just as good, if not better, than the first.

Those who enjoy the game’s combat system will be glad to know that a roguelike survival mode is coming soon.

The new mode is called The Last of Us Part II Remastered: No Return. It comes with the PlayStation 5 version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered scheduled to release on January 19, 2024. Pre-orders for the game are available already.

Naughty Dog shared plenty of information in their news feed. Gamers can expect locations from the Last of Us Part II, like Jackson and the Channel 13 News Station. Naughty Dog included a roster of playable characters with unique traits, multiple weapons and items, modifiers, and more.

The Last of Us Part II’s standard combat system carries over in the roguelike title, but exciting additions are in store. Players can upgrade weapons and skill trees like in the main campaign. Some new additions include randomized mods (environmental changes, enemy advantages, etc.) and Gambits (optional action challenges) that keep battles interesting.

No Return also has four different challenge types:

In true roguelike fashion, permanent death means players will lose all collected weapons, items, and upgrades and must start fresh. Runs are procedurally generated as well.
