Novak Djokovic, who won Wimbledon, will likely not appear at Flushing Meadows because of his refusal to get vaccinated for COVID-19, which means he will only play in two of the four tennis majors this year. Roger Federer has also withdrawn, and Rafael Nadal is ranked third but continues to fight an abdominal injury. This means that the field is wide open in 2022. Daniil Medvedev is the last man to win a singles Grand Slam title not named Djokovic, Nadal or Federer. Nadal and Djokovic have won all three of the major titles in 2022, but Medvedev is the defending champion of the U.S. Open. He is also the top-ranked singles player in the world, and the fact that he did not compete at Wimbledon did not affect his point total because the tournament ban on Belorussian and Russian athletes cost the tournament its ranking points. Medvedev has not played, though, since the Mallorca Championships in June. So he could be well rested, which would give him an edge over the likes of Nadal, but it also could lead to some rust in the early rounds.

Jannik Sinner put together a quality run at Wimbledon, advancing to the quarterfinals and going up two sets to none on Djokovic, pushing him to five sets. No other opponent pushed Djokovic that far in any match at Wimbledon this year. Sinner’s best match came in the fourth round, when he eliminated Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. On hardcourt surfaces, Sinner has a 14-3 record in 2022, with signature wins over 18th ranked Pablo Carreno Busta and Nick Kyrgios, who made it to the finals at Wimbledon. In 2021, he won the Sofia Open, the European Open and the Citi Open, all on hardcourt, and his career record on this surface is 63-31. He also won the Croatia Open, knocking off top seed Carlos Alcaraz in the final. All of these factors make Sinner a smart value pick.

Cameron Norrie is an interesting long shot, if you are looking to add one of those to your wagers. Norrie and Sinner have a number of similarities. Norrie made it all the way to the semifinals at Wimbledon, where he also fell to Djokovic. On hardcourt, Norrie has a 187-82 career record and a 38-18 record since the beginning of 2021. Some of those signature wins include victories over 4th-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas and 8th-ranked Andrey Rublev. In 2021, he won the BNP Paribas Open and the Mifel Open, both on hardcourt. This year, he won the Delray Beach Open, also on hardcourt.
