VR sequel The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution announced

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution has been announced, a sequel to the hit VR game set in the zombie-filled The Walking Dead universe.

There’s little else to go on at this point, the announcement coming on the second anniversary of the original game’s release, and the simple statement that it “is coming”. What we can tell you is that this game will immediately be up for nomination in our Most Ridiculous Video Game Name category at our Game of the Year awards. I count two colons and one hyphen, which is a bit excessive. Do you really need the ‘Chapter 2’ in there? I’m not yet sold, but hopefully it’s validated by the game itself.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners released at the start of 2020 for PC VR systems before spreading to lower-powered set ups like Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR. It was immediately popular, showing off how interactive VR worlds could really be. We gave the game a resounding 9/10 in our review. Jason had this to say:

“The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is an excellent VR game that stands out from a lot of what the medium tends to be associated with. The weight of the combat combined with the constant worry that the undead and the living both bring combine for an incredibly gratifying experience. Throw in crafting, the solid writing and meaningful quests and you’ve got a pretty special game on your hands. This is definitely worth a look if you can stomach more zombies. I mean, kill them, don’t eat them.”

We liked the game so much we ran another feature on it, explaining why The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is the best PSVR game yet in 2020. It’s since been expanded through free updates, the most recent Aftershock update adding a sizeable 4-6 hours of gameplay set after the end of the main story.

It’s time for Skydance Interactive to start afresh, though. There’s new and more powerful VR platforms out there now, with the Meta Quest 2 as a more powerful standalone headset and the promise of the Playstation VR2, which is expected by many to release later this year. This should allow for a more detailed game world, more interactivity and enhanced gameplay, amongst other improvements.
