As a special announcement for the 20th anniversary of Xbox, Microsoft has announced that Halo Infinite’s free to play multiplayer is actually coming out…. now!

You can download the multiplayer across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via both Microsoft Store and Steam. You can find the free beta on your console or PC, but here’s some handy links for you:

As a free to play game, you do not need Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in order to play.

This is technically still being called a beta, but this is the full Halo Infinite multiplayer experience and includes all the Season One content from modes and maps to the game’s battle pass. This isn’t just another run of the mill beta, and all of your progress will carry forward to the game’s full release on 8th December.

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is launching three weeks early, though it’s not 100% clear if the paid component to this will also be debuting today as well. Earlier this month, 343 Industries confirmed more of their plans for Halo Infinite’s free-to-play multiplayer, including the fact that the game’s battle pass will cost users $10. The difference here is that, unlike with many other free-to-play games, that battle pass will not expire, all of its content remaining unlockable for the life of the game.

Halo Infinite Heroes of Reach battle pass

The first season of content will take inspiration from Halo Reach, the season’s title being Heroes of Reach. That will define the kinds of cosmetics you earn through the premium pass, tying in with certain armour “cores”. All Halo Infinite players will have and unlock customisation options for the Mk. VII Spartan armour, mixing and matching shoulders, helmets, visors, kneepads, and more. If you have the battle pass, you’ll be able to unlock the Mk. V armour core and then earn cosmetics for that armour set. Cosmetics for different cores will not be mixed.

If you want to play the campaign, then you’ll still have to wait until 8th December, when it will launch across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.

We got our first look at the campaign in well over a year back in October, recapping the new setting on the Zeta halo, showing off a number snazzy environments and locales. The open world provides many opportunities to take on the Banished’s newly constructed strongholds. You can take these on in various ways, picking an approach in a manner that might feel a little familiar to other open world shooters.
