Watford vs Luton Town Match Analysis and Prediction

Luton Town will be looking to extend their unbeaten record in the Championship to eight matches when they make the short trip to face Watford on Sunday.

While the hosts have recently slipped down to 15th place as a consequence of suffering three defeats in four matches, their visitors occupy fifth spot in the standings.

When Watford defeated Stoke City in Slaven Bilic’s first game in charge, there was every expectation that they would kick on and become mainstays in the promotion hunt.

However, the Hornets have instead followed the four-goal victory over the Potters by losing three of their subsequent four matches, the latest defeat coming by a 3-0 scoreline at Millwall.

Bilic has now suffered more defeats in five games than Rob Edwards posted in double the amount of matches and the backlash will continue if Watford fail to pick up maximum points on Sunday.

Although the 2-1 victory over Norwich City was a significant positive, Watford have now conceded nine goals in four matches, while they sit four points adrift of the playoff spots.

Having suffered a hungover from their near-miss with promotion last season, Luton Town supporters may have been prepared to accept that a consolidation campaign was the best that they could hope for during 2022-23.

However, the Hatters have been terrific over the past 11 games, picking up 22 points and suffering just one defeat, that loss coming at home to Wigan Athletic.

Nathan Jones can consider that setback as a minor blip with his side unbeaten in seven matches since that defeat, while they are also on a two-game winning run against two of the favourites for promotion.

After claiming a surprise victory over Queens Park Rangers, Luton made the trip to Morwich in midweek and secured a 1-0 win at Carrow Road.

Watford news

Craig Cathcart is expected to return to the Watford defence after injury and will likely take the spot of Matthew Pollock, while Joao Pedro is pushing for an opportunity ahead of Keinan Davis in attack.

Mario Gasper could return at right-back, while Edo Kayembe could replace the injured Imran Louza in central midfield.

Luton Town news

Barring any fitness concerns, Nathan Jones could stick with the side which defeated Norwich City, having described that performance as the team’s best of the season.

The extra day of recovery should mean that the likes of Elijah Adebayo and Luke Freeman will remain among the replacements for this contest.

Prediction and Odds

Given that Luton Town are arguably one of the form teams in the division, this feels like a difficult match to call, especially with Watford playing on home turf.

The Hornets tend to be a far better side in front of their own fans, leading us to predict a draw or a home win.
