The Saints are still a mathematical chance at making the eight, but they’ll need a lot to go right from here.
It all starts by winning this week in Perth, which looks far from a guarantee given how feisty the Eagles have looked over their last few games.
West Coast has now lost three straight since knocking off Essendon a month ago, but they did play a spirited first half against the Tigers prior to last week’s late fourth quarter push against the Hawks.
Whether that stacks up to a win is up for debate, but it’s hard to feel confident in what the Saints are offering up right now.
After some promise back in May when beating Geelong, the Crows, and North in succession, the Saints have since won only one of their last six games, largely due to some very slow starts and inability to make an impact on the score sheet.
The market is rightfully in favour of Brett Ratten’s side, but this still shapes as a tough road trip for a team that hasn’t defeated the Eagles in Perth since 2010.
