Worlds 2022 Play-In Group Stage: Day 2 Recap

Here is how the games went during the Day 2 of the Worlds 2022 Play-In Groups.

Name of the game for Day 1 was EU, as both LEC teams dominated their opponents and went 4-0 collectively. The games were exciting, albeit there were multiple delays due to some positive Covid tests. Coming into Day 2, Riot announced that players were testing negative today, so they except all players to play from the stage.

Fnatic vs DetonatioN FM (Group A)

3-0 for Fnatic as Uma Noid dominated the Rift once again. Day 2 had a rough start for Fnatic, even with their now full roster including Hylissang, as they made multiple mistakes in the early game and gave up both gold and objective leads. Despite this, they were able to farm very well, and with Humanoid’s pressure from the mid lane they balanced things out. Still, DFM had control over the game, until they decided to dive the top tier two which turned out to be a bad decision. They got aced, giving Fnatic a Baron, and the game felt over after that.

Evil Geniuses vs LOUD (Group A)

LCS representatives found their first win at Worlds 2022 against LOUD in a very close affair. EG came into the game with a more aggressive bot side, looking to play through their sub-ADC Kaori. While they managed to do that well, Robo’s lead in the top lane meant LOUD had the advantage in the Herald fight and took a gold lead in the mid game. But EG’s teamfighting was on point, as always, and they found multiple successful 5v5s behind the leadership of their MVP jungler Inspired.

Saigon Buffalo vs Isurus (Group B)

Isurus not only busted out the Zilean, but top Zilean. And despite the heavy scaling on both sides, the game was a total killfest with 11 kills before the tenth minute. But once the early trading ended and the game settled, Saigon had a much better macro play and map movement. Isurus struggled to find any more kills while a fed Shogun had no problems with it. He played the teamfights great and ended the game with a pentakill of his own.

DetionatioN FM vs Chiefs Esports (Group A)

A close game and a valiant effort from the OCE representatives, but DFM finally got their first win at Worlds 2022. The game was very scrappy with both teams focusing their bot lanes which was almost like a 3v3 lane. Unfortunately for Chiefs, the Yutapon and Yaharong got an early lead and had good performances. Chiefs tried to put up a fight and even won some duels while they were behind over 7k, but at the end they could not out-teamfight the LJL champions.

Evil Geniuses vs Beyond Gaming (Group A)

The second game of the day for EG also ended in a great victory. The LCS representatives started out the game with a level two ganks from Inspired in the mid lane, and this duo was the story of the game. They moved around the map very efficiently, finding kills on all three lanes. With Jojo this fed, the game seemed like it was over but after 15 minutes we saw a lull in the action. Both teams seemed okay to just fight for drakes until EG found a great engage in the enemy jungle and ended the game.

DRX vs Saigon Buffalo (Group B)

DRX decided to start their substitute jungler Juhan instead of Pyosik for the Day 2 games. Although the game plan wasn’t different as Juhan also prio picked Maokai and mainly focused on covering his lanes early. With a couple of ganks, he put his top lane ahead against a counter pick and with the other two DRX lanes winning by themselves, they got themselves a very comfortable early lead. And despite Buffalo’s finding a couple of opportunities to get back into the game, DRX did not let it go and secured a very fast victory.

MAD Lions vs Royal Never Give Up (Group B)

RNG delivered MAD Lions their first loss of the tournament after they themselves had a shaky start yesterday. But unlike the DRX game, RNG had a more usual draft and played around their mid/jungle duo much better. Xiaohu was massive during the early game in setting up Wei, who made MAD’s job so hard after opening the game with four kills. And despite Armut having a very good game and trying to carry fights, Breathe also had spectacular teamfights on Jax and didn’t give MAD carries any room.

Istanbul Wildcats vs DRX (Group B)

If it’s not broken than don’t fix it. DRX drafted Maokai third game in a row and looked for early skirmishes. This time around they found them in bot lane, and despite HolyPhoenix getting a lot of early kills, he couldn’t compete with Zeka’s 14-minute 22-stack Mejai’s Soulstealer Akali. While the game lasted for a little more than 10 more minutes after this point, there was no contention about Wildcats’ chances of winning, but at least they made it interesting to watch by keeping up the fighting.
