Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword and How to Get It

Missing your dearest companion in battle? Don’t worry we’ll tell you all the ways to get the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword and how best to use it.

The Master Sword is not only one of Zelda’s most iconic weapons it is also one of the strongest weapons you can get in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

Luckily there are also several ways you can obtain the legendary sword, either through completing a few quests or by simply finding it.

We’ll explain to you how to complete each quest, what the requirements for finding it are, and how to use the Master Sword to its fullest potential.

Requirements for getting the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword

But just like in Breath of the Wild, there are some requirements to getting the Master Sword. You’ll be needing the paraglider which will unlock after progressing a little further in the Main Quest and an additional wheel of stamina.

For that, you’ll need to complete at least 25 Shrines and find a Goddess Stature to upgrade your stamina. You can find one of those in every town.

Alternatively, you can head to the Lookout Landing, enter the emergency shelter, and find the dark stature which will allow you to exchange heart containers for more stamina for a little fee.

Getting the Master Sword

To get the Master Sword you need to track down the Light Dragon that circles the map. That’s the big white dragon with yellow hair and piercing blue eyes.

Unlike the other dragons that circle the overworld and depths depending on the time of day. The Light Dragon is a bit harder to track down.

Generally, the dragon will circle Hyrule in a clockwork direction and roughly fly between the locations of the giant white Geoglyphs scattered all across the map.

If you’ve already uncovered them, simply use fast travel to hop in between Skyview Towers till you find it. Since time doesn’t advance when you use fast travel, this shouldn’t take too long.

Then just use the nearest Skyview Tower to get the height needed and use your paraglider to fly towards the dragon. If you’ve completed the Wind Temple, this will be a lot easier.

Now it’s just a matter of reaching the dragon’s head and hanging on for dear life to collect Master Sword. After a short cutscene, the sword will be yours.

While on the dragon, you might also shoot an arrow at its scales to collect the Light Dragons Scale. A valuable upgrade material. You can also collect Light Dragon’s shards around its various crystal horns which make for great arrow attachments.

How to Track Down the Light Dragon

Luckily, tracking down the Light Dragon becomes much easier after completing one of two quests. One you can easily complete while you’re knocking out getting to all the Skyview Towers and the other involves a tough boss fight.

The Great Deku Tree

The easiest way to track down the Light Dragon is to talk to the Great Deku Tree. Just getting there is a bit of a journey.

Like in Breath of the Wild, he’s located in the middle of the Lost Woods north of Hyrule Castle. But this time around you can’t just trial and error your way through the Lost Woods.

Instead, you’ll need to enter a chasm near the entrance to the Lost Woods. (It’s directly on the path to the Lost Woods South-West entrance). After entering you just have to head North-East until you reach some ruins that let you use your Ascend Ability.

Now you can activate the Shrine next to you to unlock fast travel and head inside the Deku Tree. Jump down the chasm and you’ll be greeted by a group of Gloom Hands.

Those are best dealt with by shooting the eyes on their palm with an arrow. Just be careful, since a grab or standing in the middle of them will cause the gloom to spread and disable some of your health.

Luckily only one of them will approach you at a time. The easiest way to get rid of them is to attach a Zonai glider to your shield. Now you only have to press ZL to draw your shield, X to jump, and A to initiate a shield surf.

Now you can quickly draw your bow and use the bullet time to snipe the eyes with a few arrows.

Shortly after you’ll have to fight Phantom Ganon who is a more straightforward fight. Only that he will spread gloom underneath him at all times. You can either use the same trick to just pepper him with arrows or dodge his attacks for a Rury Rush.

After you’ve defeated him, you can Ascend up to the surface again, talk to the Great Deku Tree to trigger a cutscene and the dragon will be marked on your map.

Dragon Tears: Complete the “Impa and the Geoglyphs” Quest

Another way to track the Light Dragon is to complete the quest “Impa and the Geoglyphs” or simply find all the Dragon Tears yourself. The quest will only give you a hint and eventually an idea of where to look for them.

To initiate the quest and get some extra story details, you need to meet up with Impa at the New Serene Stable in Hyrule Field. If you follow the road North-West from Lookout Landing you should find it pretty easily.

Next to it, you’ll also find the first Dragon Tear. After speaking with Impa and taking a short ride with her balloon, you can now look for the tear.

For that, you simply have to look at the Geoglyph and find the teardrop that is completely filled out in white. Then approach it and collect the first memory.

After Impa will ask to meet you at the Forgotten Temple in the North-West Canyon. If you’re making your way to the Snowfield next you should be able to spot it pretty easily.

Just jump down the canyon and use the paraglider to get into it and deeper inside. There you’ll meet Impa again, you can also unlock a Shrine here and you’ll find a hint where to go next.

In the large round chamber at the very end of the Forgotten Temple, you’ll find a large map on the ground with all the Geoglyphs highlighted by big stone tablets. To save time, just take a screenshot or use the Purah Pad’s photo mode.

Now you just have to track down all the Geoglyphs scattered all across Hyrule, we suggest ticking those off during your adventure as you go.

Once you’ve collected all 12 dragon tears a cutscene will play to reveal the location of the 13th dragon tear. After collecting it another cutscene will play out and you’ll have the location of the Light Dragon marked on your map until you collect the Master Sword.

What does the Master Sword do in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

The Master Sword is the strongest weapon available in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (aside from death lasers and literal Gundams). The blade will never break but will eventually use its charge when used too often.

Then it’ll simply be on a 10-minute cool down until it becomes available again. But you can still fuse your Master Sword with all sorts of materials and objects to change its properties and add some additional damage.

And if you’re at full health, you can use R to aim and shoot energy beams instead of the weapon itself. In reference to older Zelda titles. The weapon also trivializes the final boss battle.
