Ajax vs Liverpool Match Analysis and Prediction

Ajax play host to Liverpool for a Champions League group-stage match at Johan Cruijff Arena on Wednesday with the visitors looking to book a spot in the knockout stage.

One point would prove enough to see the visitors progress to the last 16 with one game to spare. although the Reds may require a victory if they are to stand a chance of overthrowing Napoli at the top of Group A.

After claiming a 4-0 victory over Rangers in their opening match of the group, Ajax appeared to have a decent chance of reaching the knockout rounds this season.

However, three consecutive defeats have left them six points adrift of Liverpool with two games remaining, meaning that they must defeat the Reds and hope that Napoli do the same on the final matchday if they are to progress to the next stage.

Ajax are at least back on track domestically after dropping five points in two games either side of the international break, having scored 15 goals in their last three matches to open up a four-point gap over PSV Eindhoven at the top of the table.

Liverpool looked to have turned a corner having defeated Manchester City and West Ham United both 1-0 in the past week, but they suffered defeat by the same scoreline to a rejuvenated Nottingham Forest side at the City Ground on Saturday.

Perhaps more worrying for Klopp is his side’s continual allowance of high quality chances for their opponents. Hopes of cutting the significant points gap down to Machester City and Arsenal at the top of the table are now surely gone, placing even more emphasis on their progression in Europe.

As such,  Liverpool will not want to face Napoli on the final matchday with their progression to the knockout rounds still riding on that game.

Ajax news

Ajax will be without Mohamed Ihattaren, Devyne Rensch and Ahmetcan Kaplan due to injuries, while midfielder Kenneth Taylor is doubtful due to a muscle strain.

Despite scoring a brace in their 4-1 victory RKC Waalwijk at the weekend, Brian Brobbey is likely to make way for Mohamed Kudus in attack.

Liverpool news

Liverpool will make the trip without Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Joel Matip due to injuries, but they could welcome back Ibrahima Konate, Darwin Nunez and Thiago Alcantara.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have both resumed training after long-term muscle injuries, but neither were included in the Champions League squad.

Prediction and Odds

We are expecting a very competitive match on Wednesday, with both sides requiring a positive result to boost their chances of qualifying for the knockout rounds.

With a draw being of little use to Ajax, they will almost certainly go all out for a win, potentially letting Liverpool gain advantage.
