In less than a month, we will have college football games going on, which means that it is time to take an updated look at the sports betting odds for Heisman Trophy candidates. Last year, Bryce Young won the coveted trophy playing quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, and he is the second-ranked favorite right now on most odds lists. As the spring and summer months have gone by, Stroud and Young have swapped spots at the top of the odds list. Both of them put up huge numbers last season, throwing for at least 4,400 yards and 44 scores apiece. Both of them saw some of their top skill players head to the NFL draft, but they play for teams that are contenders for the national championship. They have the inside track as quarterbacks who put up big stats while playing for a Power 5 team that wins at least 10 games.

The transfer portal has played an intriguing role this off-season, of course. Of the top 15 betting choices on this list, five of them are playing with new schools. Kedon Slovis went from USC, where his numbers have declined over the first three seasons of his collegiate career, to Pitt, where he looks to rebound while replacing Kenny Pickett. Jaxson Dart also left USC, taking the starting job at Ole Miss. Spencer Rattler departed Oklahoma and will be the latest hope for South Carolina. Quinn Ewers went from Ohio State to Texas and still has yet to play a meaningful down in college football despite raking in seven figures through NIL deals. Dillon Gabriel is one of the most intriguing names, having transferred from UCF to Oklahoma to join new head coach Brent Venables. Why would Stroud and Young switch? I view them as co-favorites, although it has been almost 50 years since the last repeat winner (Archie Griffin), suggesting that the voters do not have much of an appetite for a back-to-back winner with such talent out there.

Caleb Williams is a big name who will draw interest after following Lincoln Riley west. Riley oversaw Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts in the closing seasons of their collegiate careers, and his ability to get quarterbacks to the top of their game is one reason why Williams has drawn so much action. The biggest obstacle to Williams’ candidacy likely has nothing to do with his arm or accuracy; instead, it has to do with the fact that USC’s defense is not likely to be good enough for the Trojans to win ten games in the regular season, no matter how many points Williams and the rest of the Trojan offense can put up.
