Dawand Jones Background

Position: Offensive Tackle

School: Ohio State

Size: 6-foot-8, 374 pounds

Class: Senior

2022 Stats: Second Team All-Big Ten (Media)

Jones was able to get plenty of experience at Ohio State over the last four seasons. Now, he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.

As a three-star recruit out of Indiana, Jones signed on with Ohio State. He appeared in nine games as a true freshman in 2019. In 2020, he was able to get a start. He fully stepped into the starting lineup during the 2021 season and made Second Team All-Big Ten. His play helped Ohio State go 11-2 and win the Rose Bowl. Jones returned in 2022 at right tackle and made Second Team All-Big Ten again (media). He led the Buckeyes to a 11-2 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Although he had an extra year of eligibility, Jones decided to forego that and enter the draft. He is currently projected to be a day-two pick.

Dawand Jones Strengths

Jones is the biggest offensive lineman in this draft class at 6-foot-8 and 374 pounds. His size gives him tremendous power and strength. Jones has the ability to overpower just about any defensive lineman he lines up against. He also has really long arms, measuring at 36 and 38 inches, which helps him sustain blocks.

He has been a good pass blocker over his collegiate career. Jones neutralizes rushers with his strength and long arms. Even though he doesn’t have good flexibility, he is able to stop defenders from bending around the edge. Power rushers stand no chance, as he has a good anchor.

His hands are strong and he uses them well. Jones shows good hand placement and timing with his punches. He has huge hands and they are heavy. With his hands and length, he is able to sustain blocks for a solid amount of time.

Dawand Jones Weaknesses

Jones is not the most athletic tackle in this class. He lacks quickness, agility and flexibility. Usually his length and hand usage can help control matchups, but super-athletic edge rushers can beat him if they possess these qualities.

He is a solid run blocker, but Jones is not the greatest in open space. Jones struggles to get to the second level while run blocking after executing his initial block. The team who drafts him will have to keep those limitations in mind when game-planning.

There were too many penalties on tape for Jones. Whether it was holding or false starts, Jones needs to be more disciplined at the next level. These are fixable issues and he’ll need to work them out so that he doesn’t hurt his team.
