Loss and grief are powerful things. And with Under The Waves on Xbox, PlayStation and PC, it even compels our protagonist to chase a new future. Professional diver Stan wants to swim away from it all, and where better to do so in the murky depths of the ocean? The deep sea is a lonely place, but as Stan will soon find out it is also a mysterious one…

A True Love Letter

This is the next title to be released under Quantic Dream’s ‘Spotlight’ label, which promotes a variety of indie titles. And you’ll find that Under The Waves is a proper love letter to the ocean. So much so that developers Parallel Studio have teamed up with Surfrider Foundation Europe to support the preservation of our oceans.

This one is set in a techno-futuristic interpretation of the 1970s. It has you joining Stan in this narrative adventure as he delves into the deep seas. A strange set of events unfolds down in the dark, and Stan will be exploring the intricate caves of the sea bed to restore his memories. In doing so, his psyche will take many twists and turns. Can he save his own life by the time he resurfaces?

You’ll progress through Under The Waves by collecting a variety of materials to craft equipment. These will allow you to leave the usual path, and discover the true hidden gems of the water.

“Under The Waves is a project I’ve had in mind since I was a teenager, based on a prototype for a 2D submarine game that involved cleaning up ocean pollution. That idea served as the basis, but it was really our work and inspiration as a team that made the game what it is today,” explains Ronan Coiffec, CEO and Game Director of Parallel Studio. “I am proud to have been able to bring this adventure to life with the support of Spotlight by Quantic Dream. This collaboration has brought us creative proposals and technical solutions that go beyond just publishing our game.”

Under the Waves on Xbox Game Description

Under the Waves is a narrative-driven adventure game about the engulfing power of grief. Set in the depths of the North Sea in a techno-futuristic 1970s, professional diver Stan is struggling to overcome a life-changing loss and embrace a new future. The isolation of the deep sea is a fitting manifestation of his state of mind, and as Stan retreads further into his self-imposed solitude, he starts to experience strange events far beneath the waves. He will eventually have to make a difficult choice… 

A love letter to the oceans, Under The Waves invites you to dive into a gorgeous underwater world, brought to life in a poetic blend of cinematic visuals and poignant storytelling. Live a gripping story through Stan’s eyes and guide him through an unforeseen series of events that will bring him deeper and deeper into the abyss, the reflection of his own psyche. 

Wander the vast seabed piloting Stan’s submarine and encounter the beautiful wildlife, Stan’s only company while he’s trapped in his own mind.
