EDG beat DWG KIA to Win Worlds 2021

The 2021 League of Legends World Championship, known as Worlds and the biggest esports event of the year, finished Saturday as EDG (Edward Gaming) from China’s LPL defeated (DWG KIA) DAMWON KIA of Korea’s LCK in the grand finals.

EDG vs DWG KIA

The match itself was a close one. Running through a full best-of-five game series, Edward Gaming won 3-2 against arguably the best team in the world. Both EDG and DWG KIA represented the best from China and Korea, coming in as the LPL and LCK’s first seed teams. This clash of the best saw multiple close games with each one running over 30 minutes. Zhao “Jiejie” Li-Jie helped carry the team to victory through his engages and ganks on Xin Zhao, even winning the MVP award.

Only one last teamfight and turret dive was left before EDG became the Worlds 2021 winner, taking down DWG KIA in the grand finals. An explosive engage from Jiejie and Tian “Meiko” Ye after taking down DAMWON’s inhibitors wrapped it up. Korea’s brief reign as the best ends and China comes back to take the League of Legends esports throne.

Worlds 2021 Finals

China’s victory truly took the community by surprise. In fact, only 14% of League of Legends esports fans guessed that EDG would win the Worlds 2021 finals. Most predicted that DWG KIA would end as back-to-back champions after becoming the Worlds 2020 winner. Especially after all four LCK teams made it to semifinals and eliminated Cloud9, the hope of NA.

As for the esports event itself, Riot Games made sure to pull everything out, also celebrating the release of Arcane on Netflix. The opening show even included top performers like Imagine Dragons, PVRIS, Bea Miller, JID, and Denzel Curry. PVRIS recently performed for Riot Games with Burn it Down, the 2021 Worlds song.

Edward Gaming now holds the throne for the world’s best, earning nearly $500 thousand for the team. EDG’s players also receive an 18 karat white gold championship ring designed by Mercedes-Benz to commemorate this victory. Now that Worlds is over, China and the LPL are back on top of the esports ladder with EDG as the 2021 League of Legends World Championship champion.
